Charming Cottage For Two in the Dordogne
Connezac, between Angouléme and Périgord in South West France

Le Pigeonnier
Dating from about 1835 and surrounded by particularly attractive gardens, the cottage is part of a tiny hamlet of three houses close to the village of Connezac. The hamlet of Le Maine du Bost is in the northern part of the Dordogne, an area of green fields, peaceful valleys and chestnut forests, between Angoulême in the Charente and Périgueux.
Early summer, when everything is fresh and colourful and autumn, when the chestnuts are harvested, the days warm and the evenings still light are possibly the best times of the year here. There is a sense of peace then and at every turn, beauty strikes the eye.
The cottage has lots of charm and is private and independent. Cheerfully decorated and cosily comfortable, it has an open plan living room on the ground floor with a wood burning stove, television, a dining table and a corner kitchen. The kitchen is equipped with a washing machine, oven and hob, a microwave and fridge. Upstairs is a double bedroom and a bathroom with a shower, washbasin and wc. Outside is a private garden where it is pleasant to end the day with a relaxing glass of wine. The pool is sometimes shared with us and we are discreetly on hand if there is anything you need to know, although the house has maps and local information.
The Area
Golf, tennis and fishing are all reasonably close at hand and you can walk or cycle for miles almost anywhere, hardly seeing another car or person. A day out can take you deep into the Dordogne through a changing landscape of woods and valleys crossed by rivers guarded by towering feudal châteaux, ancient towns and villages built of honey coloured stone with red tiled roofs, clustered around a church and scattered farms, many of which you can visit to buy strawberries, fresh farm eggs, sometimes home made fruit tarts, foie gras and pâtés. Brantôme, about 30 minutes drive south of here is worth a stop, perhaps for lunch. As we are close to the Charente border, a trip there can take you into a different countryside, just as lovely. Angoulême (45 kms) holds an annual classic racing car race around the old part of the town every September, which includes Bentley, Bugatti, Ferrari, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Porsche and Maserati amongst others and attracts entrants from all over Europe.
