Our 19th century home is in the little hamlet of Ousse Suzan, deep in the Landes forest, 20 minutes from Mont de Marsan. Ousse Suzan is at the very centre of a forest that peacefully surrounds us and protects us, soothes our senses and delights the eye with the change of every season. Few places are more than an hour from here; the great Atlantic beaches, the old spa town of Dax, little tucked away villages, Armagnac country, Biarritz, the Basque country and the foothills of the Pyrenees. Bordeaux is 120 kms from here.
Dinner is when you can savour the gastronomic flavours of Gascony. In the summer, the table is laid out under the old oak trees. In winter, the fire is lit and warms the spirit and the wine. We have two double rooms with bathrooms and a suite with a double bedroom, a salon and a bathroom. Each of the rooms look out onto the forest and are prettily decorated and furnished with family furniture. All the bathrooms have baths. A cot can be provided on request.
Cannelle is a double bedroom decorated in red and green tones, furnished in the style of Louis XIII with pictures depicting the seasons and past family events. Oranger is a twin room in the style of Louis XVI decorated in peach tones. La Suite Citronnier is composed of a small entrance hall, a double bedroom and bathroom and a salon. A single divan bed can be added on request. The salon has a large fireplace and a piano and opens into the dining room. The walls are hung with old paintings and the rooms furnished with period country furniture. There is also a small sitting room with a library, where guests can relax quietly. A kitchenette with hot plates, a microwave and a fridge is available to make children's meals and keep cold drinks. Garden furniture is placed in secluded spots around the garden amongst plane trees, oaks, pines and under a magnolia, and a terrace shaded by a tree surrounds the pool. Croquet, pétanque, table tennis, tennis racquets, various card games and bicycles are also available.
The Area
There are tennis courts in the village just over a kilometre away and there is a good golf course at Mont de Marsan. The beach at Mimizan is 45 kms from here and is a favourite with surfers and windsurfers. Several lakes in the forest also have water sports facilities. Country races are popular here and horses are often exercised on the bridal paths through the forest. Local stables have horses to suit different levels of experience, which you can hire for an hour or a morning. Some of the back roads pass through old villages like Solférino, which dates back to 1857, or to Pissos, a village that has a Maison des Artisans that sells hand made pine furniture and other local things. Just off the main N10 road, which plunges across the Landes from Bordeaux to the Basque Country is Belin-Béliet, birthplace of Eleanor of Aquitaine. Mont de Marsan is the main town of the Landes, on the very edge of the forest. The centre of the town is pleasant to walk around and there are attractive little markets on Saturday mornings, one in the old marketplace, another in front of what was once the old theatre. The covered market is now inside it. The race track is to the north of the town, where the biggest race of the year is held every September. Travel Information
