Traditional Alpine Ski Chalet in the Rhone Alps
Valloire, an hour from Chambéry in Eastern France
3 bedrooms, sleeps up to 8 people
Chalet de l'Ours
Valloire is between the Télégraphe and the Galibier peaks and is the oldest established ski centre in the Alps, which has managed to combine good summer facilities together with excellent ski facilities in winter without losing its essential character. The chalet is a short walk from the centre of Valloire, shops and a choice of restaurants, close to the Moulin Benjamin chairlifts, as well as to slopes that can bring you directly back to the the chalet. The nearest airports are Lyon or Geneva, roughly two hours from Valloire.
As a ski centre, Valloire caters for all levels of experience and has more than 150 kms of ski runs at different levels of altitude and a variety of ski lifts and cable cars. It also has good cross-country skiing, bowling, ice skating and a sports centre with a sauna. In summer, Valloire becomes a different place, popular with walkers and climbers, and cyclists, who like to follow part of the gruelling Tour de France route. There is also trout fishing, tennis courts and a swimming pool and, a kilometre away, a golf course. Traditionally made in wood and furnished in a warm mountain style, the chalet has a living room with television and a bar. The kitchen has a dining table that seats up to ten people and is fully equipped with, amongst other things, a dishwasher, washing machine and dryer, an oven and hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, a coffee maker and other appliances.
The chalet has three bedrooms, one double with a cot and two bedrooms with bunk beds and a pull-out bed if needed. The bathroom has a bath and wc and there is also a shower room with wc. The outside terrace is equipped in summer with garden furniture and a barbecue. The Area
The snow is usually good from the beginning of December until the end of April and there are a variety of runs to suit everyone, ranging from beginners to challenging for both downhill and cross-country. There are 150 kms of downhill skiing with 78 individual pistes served by 34 ski lifts. Skiing and snowboarding above 2500m throughout the season. Good ski school and activities for children. Valloire also has an ice rink, bowling, a library, a cinema and a disco. In the summer the valley is very different, changing into an alpine landscape scattered with chapels and tiny hamlets, the climate is warm and the air pure. There are tennis courts and golf courses, riding stables and hang-gliding and a swimming pool, plus over 130 kms of trail for those who love to walk and climb, or cycle, including the Col du Galibier, which is often on the Tour de France route.
