Apartment in the centre of Chamonix-Mont Blanc
In the Haute Savoie, Rhone Alps of Eastern France
3 bedrooms, sleeps 6 people

La Petite Savoyarde

Originally a Chamonix family house with exceptional views of the Mont Blanc peaks, the chalet is now divided into six apartments and is right in the centre of Chamonix. A two minute walk takes you into the heart of old Chamonix, which still looks much as it did a hundred years ago and as one of the foremost ski and climbing centres, it is impossible not to be infected by the spirit of adverture here.

The Brévant two stage cable car to the slopes gives the most famous view of Mont Blanc itself. The second stage spans an enormous chasm and is worth the ride for the sheer excitement alone. Lower down there are marvellous walks back down to Chamonix and along the Balcon de Merler to La Flégère. The Aiguille du Midi cable car climbs in two stages from Chamonix to an altitude of about 3842 metres, the second of which is spectacular. From here, you can go across the glaciers of the mythical Vallée Blanche or climb another 1000 meters toward Mont Blanc.

Our top floor apartment has been made as warm and comfortable as possible and is decorated in an attractive, traditional mountain style with oak wood floors and beams. The main floor has a large open plan salon with two sofas and a hi-fi system, a dining table that seats six and a breakfast bar that divides the salon from the kitchen. The kitchen is equipped with everything one would need, including a dishwasher, oven and hob, a fridge/freezer, microwave, a fondue set and toaster, coffee maker and kettle. There is also a washing machine, dryer and ironing facilities.

The two bedrooms each have twin beds, wardrobes and shelf space. The bathroom has both bath and shower and there is a separate wc. The mezzanine bedroom has two single beds and a bathroom with shower. There is also an area just above the salon with a sofa, satellite television, DVD, and various games. At the entrance of the apartment is a large cupboard for coats and boots.

The apartment has a balcony facing towards the mountains and there is a large communal garden from where, in summer, you can watch climbers ascend to the summit of Mont Blanc. There is also private garage parking, secure ski equipment storage and a drying cupboard for ski boots.

The Area

Chamonix has every facility for both summer and winter activities. You can make arrangements for guides at the ski school, there is a swimming pool and an ice rink and a sports centre, which has tennis and squash courts. The town also has a variety of shops and restaurants, a cinema, a casino and nightclubs and a regular bus service, which serves the valley.

Summer is a time for picking blueberries and a paradise for hiking in the mountains, fishing, playing golf or tennis, hang-gliding, cycling and, climbing. During the winter, there are numerous downhill and cross-country ski routes to suit all levels of expertise, as well as other snow sports like tobogganing. The ski school caters for beginners and children alike.

Evenings can be spent in any one of several good restaurants, at the casino or dancing the night away. The town is pleasant to walk around, stopping at a cafe terrace or looking around the specialist shops. The Saturday morning market in the Place du Mont Blanc is a chance to find some of the fresh fruit and vegetables, cheeses and mountain hams and salamis that the Savoie is famous for.

Around Chamonix are old mountain villages and little hamlets and you can get to either Courmayer in Italy via the Mont Blanc tunnel, or to Switzerland via the Col des Montets at the bottom of the valley.

The World Cup Ski Championships are held in January, a 24 hour ice motor racing event is held at the beginning of February and the Fête des Guides celebration is held on August 15th, amongst other events during the year.
