Studio in the centre of Uzès in the Provence Gard
Between Avignon and Nimes in Southern France
Sleeps 2 people
Le Studio
Beautifully restored and furnished, the studio is on the first floor of one of the historical buildings dating from the Middle Ages, in the medieval centre of Uzès. It is within walking distance to the beautiful Place aux Herbes main square, scene of a marvellous Saturday morning market when people come in from miles around to shop and sit in the shade near the fountain with friends, in one of the open air cafes and restaurants. Part of the charm of Uzès is the maze of ancient narrow streets around the studio, where you can find antique shops, little local shops and art galleries, which wind around the old Ducal Palace and its medieval garden, eventually leading to the square.
The studio is tucked away in one of these quiet back streets. You pass through an old vaulted archway where sunlight warms the stone, plunging you back in time, then up the stone steps that lead to an interior courtyard. Independent of the rest of the building, the studio has an interior that is furnished with all modern comforts and is decorated with paintings and colours in harmony with its surroundings.
The windows have double shutters and look out onto either the inner courtyard or onto the street and the Place aux Herbes in the distance and the studio is arranged around these. An armoire and a small sofa are near the entrance. The centre of the room has a convertable sofa bed and an antique blanket box for bed linen, two chairs and a bureau. Next to the window looking onto the street is the kitchenette and a bathroom with shower. It is centrally heated, and there is television and a CD player.
The Area
Just outside Uzès is a 9-hole golf course and there are tennis courts and a swimming pool within a short walk of the studio. There are also several riding stables within driving distance, fishing in the Eure river a kilometre outside of the town, lovely walks along the Gardon river and through the garrigue and the vineyards. Saint Quentin la Poterie is a small village about 4 kms from Uzès. Market day is every Friday morning where you can buy fresh local fruit and vegetables, cheeses and charcuterie, olives or flowers and sometimes fabrics and basketware. This is a village of potters, who make a range of imaginative pottery that is essential Provence. There is usually an exhibition of their work and you can visit the studios and watch the pottery being made (bring an extra bag!). There are three restaurants including an excellent Michelin starred Thais restaurant. Other villages worth visiting are St Siffret, St Maximin and Arpaillarges, which has a museum for old car and machinery enthusiasts. Next door to it is the Musée des Jouets, which has a wonderful collection of children's toys. Travel Information
