Charming Chambres d'Hôtes with pool
Tourrettes-sur-Loup, near Nice in the South of France
3 suites and one double room with private bathrooms

La Demeure de Jeanne

Set in a beautiful Mediterranean garden, our house is within walking distance of the village of Tourettes sur Loup, 5 kms from St Paul de Vence in the hills behind Nice, in an area scattered with charming old villages and lovely villas amongst the cypress trees and mimosas, orange groves and vines. A stream runs through the garden and there are marvellous, sweeping views of the coast. Nice and Antibes are 25 kms from here, Cannes and Monaco are 35 kms.

Comfort, and peaceful sense of well being is what we hope you will find here. The house has a summer sitting room, a reading room, a winter sitting room and a television room as well as a dining room. During the summer, breakfast is served at tables around the pool. On Spring and Autumn afternoons, tea or coffee with little home made cakes is served around the fireplace in the winter sitting room. Dinner is available on request.

All the rooms in the house are prettily decorated in a colourful provencal style. The wrought iron balconies on the first floor bedrooms all have sunblinds to keep them cool in summer.

La Suite du Chat Bleu is on the ground floor of the house, a very comfortable double bedroom with a corner salon, television and video, decorative objects and a double armoire. The en-suite bathroom has a large bath with shower, washbasin, wc and bidet.

La Suite du Chat Vert is on the first floor and has two bedrooms that share a bathroom between them. The main bedroom has a double bed and a corner salon, an armoire and television and video. Double windows open onto a private balcony with garden table and chairs.

The second bedroom is a sitting room study with a double divan bed. The bathroom is decorated in a pink marble effect and has a large shower, washbasin, bidet and wc.

La Chambre du Chat Jaune is also on the first floor, a double room with a dressing table and salon area with various decorative objects. The bathroom, in rose marble with a shower, washbasin and wc, is in the hall next to the bedroom.

La Suite du Chat Blanc is the master suite. A double bedroom with a corner salon area, television and video and widows, which open onto a private balcony with a table and chairs that has lovely views of the sea, the garden and pool. There is a dressing room that leads to the bathroom with a bath, a shower, two washbasins, a vanity table, bidet and wc and several mirrors.

The house is surrounded by a lush Mediterranean garden; palms and yuccas, a variety of cacti, olive trees and old roses and, fruit trees like plum and mandarine, apricot and lemon. Facing towards the sea and the countryside are tiled and grass terraces around a large oval pool, scattered with tables and chairs, sunbeds and cushions.

On sunny mornings, breakfast is served at individual tables around the pool. On warm summer evenings, dinner is prepared in the professional kitchen in the pool house and served in the outside dining area facing the garden and illuminated pool. Drinks can be enjoyed around the pool or at the bar in the pool house.

The Area

You have the Riviera at your feet; beaches, water sports including sea fishing, the shops, restaurants and more restaurants, a cosmopolitan atmosphere and, style. The nearest golf course is 20 kms away and there are others, notably at Mougins just behind Cannes, within 30 minutes. During the winter you can even go skiing 35 kms from here.

In contrast, there are several small vineyards around here that you can visit, which make much of the red, white and rosé wines that are drunk on the Côte d'Azur. St Jeannet is one in particular that has a good reputation, Tourettes sur Loup, Bellet and Saint Paul de Vence are others.

The vineyards and olive groves overlooking the Mediterranean, the clear light and strong colours, the village café terraces and the food have all drawn some of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Vence (5 kms) attracted painters such as Matisse, Chagall and Soutine as well as generations of writers and poets, including D.H. Lawrence. The old town is still a tightly walled circle of medieval buildings, much as it was centuries ago. Inside, are cafés in the central square facing the beautifully decorated church, where people stroll, meet family and friends and pass the time of day. The market along the narrow rue du Marché is on the same day of the week as it has been for the last seven hundred years. The architectural design and decoration of the Chapelle de la Rosaire is the work of Matisse.

Saint Paul de Vence (7 kms) is a delightful village that sits on a hill with golden stone and russet tiled houses and narrow pedestrian streets have been sensitively conserved. There are shops and art galleries there, and the hotel beside the boules pitch under the plane trees is something of a modern art museum, thanks to the enlightened owner, who has accepted distinguished paintings in exchange for his distinguished fare. Just outside the village is the Maeght Foundation, which has a superb collection of modern works of art and sculpture.

Renoir retired to Cagnes sur Mer, where he continued to paint even though the brushes had to be placed in his arthritic fingers; his house is open to visitors. Grasse of course, means perfumes and essences. Biot is another delightful village, famous for making glass and for inspiring the works of the painter and ceramic artist Fernand Léger.
