Three Country Gites in the Pays de la Loire
Le Vieil Baugé, between Angers and Saumur, Maine et Loire
1, 2 or 3 bedrooms, sleeping 2/4, 4 or 6/9 people

Le Logis de Poëllier

We are situated in the country close to the village of Le Vieil Baugé, about 30 minutes from Angers and Saumur at the heart of the Anjou vineyards. This is some of the loveliest countryside in the Loire, an area of woodlands and orchards, farmland and nurseries producing gorgeous arrays of flowers, mingled amongst the vineyards. It is a landscape of gentle, natural colours, the greens of woodland copses and fields, the white stone of the houses contrasting with grey black slate roofs.

Baugé is a ten minute drive from here and has a choice of shops and restaurants, a swimming pool and tennis courts that are open to everyone. There are riding stables in the forest and not far is a play park, which children love. Another 10 minutes away is an international standard golf course and a lake where anyone can spend the day fishing.

We have three independent gites in the cottage buildings grouped around the courtyard of our 16th century house, set in ten acres of gardens and pastureland, from where you can walk for miles with hardly meeting a soul.

La Chapelle is built over the ancient troglodyte cave dwellings that were once here and the tiny windows and stone walls of large living room and dining room still give it something of a warm, cosy troglodyte feeling. The corner kitchen has an oven and hob, microwave, fridge and dishwasher and there is a downstairs wc. Upstairs are two double bedrooms with shower rooms.

Le Petit Logis is in the longhouse on the other side of the courtyard. It has three bedrooms, each with en-suite shower rooms. The downstairs bedroom has twin beds, one of the upstairs bedrooms has a double bed and two single beds and the third bedroom has a double bed and a single bed and its own separate entrance.

The living room has television and video and a kitchenette area with two hot-plates and a fridge, plus a separate kitchen with an oven and microwave, hob, fridge and dishwasher.

The Studio, next to La Chapelle, is snug and private with a double bed and a mezzanine with two single beds, ideal for a family. The kitchenette has two hot-plates, a microwave and fridge and there is television.

Laundry facilities for all three gites are available on request.

The Area

The castle at Angers appears in the distance, long before you reach the town. It has seventeen towers and massive outer and inner defence walls, though now there are gardens in the moat and a herd of fallow deer and a unique collection of tapestries. The centre of the town has many fine old buildings dating from the 15th century with timbered overhanging storeys, which shade the narrow streets from the sun, and shops, markets and a good choice of restaurants.

Nearby there are several châteaux to visit, such as Le Plessis-Macé, Bois-Mautboucher, Percher and Magnanne. Serrant, to the west on the N23 has one of the loveliest château in the Loire. South of Angers are several places like Gennes, Rochfort-sur-Loire and Chemillé, where you can taste some of the best wines.

This, traditionally, is great horse country and Saumur is home of the famous Cadre Noir riding school founded by Louis XV. The Musée de la Cavalerie there, traces the history of the cavalry and you can often watch the riders and horses in training for one of their spectacular displays of riding skills. Saumer also has a château with towers at each corner, bell turrets and ornate gable windows that give it a special charm.

St-Hilaire-St-Florent, just outside Saumur is one of the best places to taste some of the sparkling wines (best with lunch) and there is also a quirky museum there, devoted to wild mushrooms. The national riding school is next door to it.

Rochmenier has an underground country museum showing how the troglodytes (cave dwellers) lived until quite recently. Fontevraud l'Abbaye is an 11th century monastery with five separate parts - for monks, nuns, lepers and the infirm and, repentant women. It also houses the tombs of both English and French kings.
