Delightful Family Home in Calvados
Dozulé, near Deauville and Honfleur in Normandy
5 bedrooms, sleeps 10/12 people
La Fénière
The house is just outside Dozulé in perhaps one of the loveliest parts of Normandy, an area of intensely green, pastoral countryside, grazing dairy herds and orchards, heavy with apples or blossom. The milk from the dairy herds goes into making Camembert, Livarot and Puy L'Evêque cheese, butter and thick cream, which are used abundantly in many of Normany's classical dishes, the apples go into making cider and Calvados brandy and mouthwatering apple tarts. Along the coast are Deauville and Honfleur, beaches and excellent seafood restaurants, inland are colourful manor houses, thatched cottages and noisy farmyards.
This is a great family house, ideal for children with a pretty garden, surrounded by peaceful countryside. Dozulé has all essential shops, including a supermarket. The ground floor of the house has an open plan living room and dining room with a fireplace, television and video and a hi-fi. The kitchen is equipped with, amongst other things, a dishwasher and washing machine, an oven and hob, microwave and fridge. There is also a double bedroom and bathroom.
Upstairs are four other bedrooms, a bathroom and a mezzanine. Two are double bedrooms, the third is a twin room with a cot, the fourth has bunk beds and a spare pull-out bed if needed. The mezzanine has a spare single bed and a sofa bed, plus a second television. Various children's games are provided. There are sunbeds in the garden, a barbecue and table tennis. The Area
Of the towns and village along the coast, Deauville reigns supreme and during the summer, people come as much for the regattas, tennis tournaments or to play golf, as for the beach. The annual Yearling Sales and races are held in the third week of August. Trouville just along from Deauville has much more of a beach atmosphere and caters well for families and children. The beaches at Blonville and Villers sur Mer are quieter and perhaps pleasanter. Water sports are also well catered for and there are restaurants and cafés everywhere. Houlgate is quietly residential as is Cabourg with its wide promenade and tree lined avenues fanning out from the lawns in front of the casino. Bayeux is 40 kms from here, Caen is 30 kms away. The manor houses inland are all highly individual in design, many with moats, pitched roofs in red and coloured tiles, some built in a chequerboard of brick and stone, some with a geometric pattern of tiles. Crève-Coeur is one such manor house near La Fénière and there are dozens of others hidden in country lanes as you meander around. Dives sur Mer, 6 kms from the house was the birthplace of William the Conqueror, though today it is better known for beaches where you can fish for shrimp. Travel Information
