2 bedrooms each, sleeping 4 or 4/5 people
Pommerol
Situated 2 kms from the delightful village of St Dizier-Leyrenne, which features a range of small shops, bar/café and a pretty lake with sandy beaches and perimeter walk. Pommerol is an ideal place to relax, unwind and chill out from the everyday pressures, demands and stresses of daily life. It comprises four charming and individual, newly renovated gites within two contrasting Limousin barns that date back over 200 years. Each gite has been sympathetically refurbished, retaining original features, whilst incorporating modern conveniences to provide an attractive, comfortable and enchanting holiday retreat.
The surrounding picturesque landscape remains an exceptional natural environment in an area of outstanding natural beauty. There is an abundance of birds and wildlife, trees and plants, living in harmony in peaceful countryside. All you need to do is come and explore on foot, bicycle or horseback. A warm welcome is guaranteed. Pommerol was originally a working farm situated in a small hamlet of seven houses, of which only five remain. The surrounding fields now belong to other farms and at times, are populated by the famous Limousin cattle. Following complete renovation, it is now our home and we are on hand to help with anything you need to know about the area. Our largest gite is located within the old storage barn attached to the main house and is directly opposite the larger barn, which has been converted into three other gites and a games room. Additionally, there is a communal laundry room with washing machine, tumble dryer and ironing facilities. Between the two barns is an outdoor swimming pool with Roman steps, surrounded by a tiled terrace equipped with sunloungers. The pool has a security alarm fitted in compliance with French law to prevent accidents with small children. All guests have shared access to the pool, which is cleaned on a daily basis. Pailler, originally an open fronted barn used principally for storing straw is attached to the main farmhouse. The building also contained a bread oven, which has been retained as a feature within the downstairs bedroom. It is the largest of the gites and can sleep 4/5 people. Both double bedrooms have their own en suite shower room, complete with wc and washbasin. In the ground floor bedroom there is a 3/4 (4ft) size French style bed. The second bedroom is on the first floor. The spacious lounge with its high ceiling reveals all the original beams and trusses, whilst the exposed stone behind the wood-burning stove is very imposing. There is a large, fully fitted kitchen, which includes an electric oven and an integral fridge. There is also a large, traditional dining table that comfortably seats six. The paved terrace in front of the double doors overlooks the swimming pool where you can relax and enjoy a glass or two of Bordeaux. Garden furniture and a barbecue are provided.
Tilleul is converted from the original old cow stalls and once overlooked an ancient lime tree. It sleeps 4 very comfortably. The twin and double bedrooms incorporate many of the original features. A spacious bathroom with bath and overhead shower, wc and washbasin is located between the two rooms. The open plan kitchen is fully equipped and leads to a lounge/dining area that opens onto the swimming pool. All on one level, this gite provides the ideal accommodation for couples and those who are less mobile. At the front of the gite there is a small area for relaxing and to the side and rear is a gravelled terrace overlooking the beautiful Limousin countryside. Garden furniture and a barbecue are provided. Fenil was originally the old hayloft and is accessed via wood stairs from the games room. This light, airy, first floor gite provides accommodation for 4 people in double and twin rooms, separated by a large bathroom with a bath and overhead shower, wc and washbasin. The open lounge/dining area overlooks the swimming pool at the front, whilst the fully equipped kitchen includes a full size gas cooker and an integral fridge and has extensive views over surrounding fields. The gite also has access to a small front terrace plus rear gravelled terrace that is an ideal place to relax and take in the stunning sunset at the end of a long hot summer’s day. Garden furniture and a barbecue are provided. Rocaille is a two storey gite accommodating 4 people, at the right-hand end of the barn, which was previously cow stalls. This part was used for over wintering and feeding young cattle. Its name is a reminder of the very stony ground we found when we began restoring the barn! Entering the double doors on the ground floor, you will find a very spacious, open plan lounge, featuring the cow byres that have been carefully restored. The room leads to a fully fitted kitchen equipped with everything necessary. There is a double bedroom and a second twin bedroom, both on the first floor. (The twin room can sleep more by arrangement). The bathroom is situated between the bedrooms and incorporates a bath with an overhead shower, washbasin and wc. At the front of the gite you will find a small terraced area facing the swimming pool and boules court. To the rear there is a gravelled terrace with views over open countryside. Garden furniture and a barbecue are provided and can be set up in either area. The Area
The Limousin is a region in southern central France in the lower foothills of the Massif Central. It has an oceanic climate and comprises three departments: Correze, Creuse and Haute Vienne with Limoges as the regional capital. Pommerol is located in the Creuse, the heart of rural France and one of the least densely populated parts of Europe. In fact, there are actually more cows in the Creuse than people! A quarter of the Creuse is covered by dense, green forest, the natural beauty has not been spoilt by development and you can breathe in the pure air of the great outdoors! Often referred to as the French Lake District because of the abundance of lakes (a mecca for water sports enthusiasts) and numerous rivers, it is paradise, a lure for fishermen with some of the best trout fishing in France. The Creuse is scenic, unspoiled and peaceful, a haven for country lovers, a pastoral delight depicting a bygone age that has largely disappeared from Western Europe. All you have to do is come and share it. Pommerol is an ideal location for simply relaxing, soaking up the sun or taking an occasional dip in the pool. Our games room has a pool table, darts, table football and table tennis, plus a selection of boxed games and a small library of books suitable for all ages. It is also an excellent base for exploring the local area with its wealth of activities, history and culture. Walking – There are numerous, themed walking circuits besides the more challenging national network of hiking routes (Grande randonnée), which criss-cross the Limousin. Most tourist offices can supply local maps showing rambling routes. Serious hikers can obtain detailed Tops-guides from Maisons de la Presse and bookshops. Fishing – The Creuse is an anglers dream with 3800 kms of streams and rivers, plus 3000 hectares of lakes. It has some of the finest fishing in Europe; trout, carp, pike, salmon, bream, dace, chub, gudgeon, barbell, perch, black-bass, to name but a few. The smaller rivers are perfect for those starting out and ideal for children. The larger rivers are places for the more experienced and professionally minded. A special holiday permit allows you to fish in all categories of lake and river for a 15-day period. Cycling – The quiet countryside roads make cycling enjoyable, safe and stress free. For the more adventurous, there are numerous sign posted off road routes, for mountain bikes with four levels of difficulty. Bird-watching – The large areas of woodland, non-intensive use of agricultural land and unpolluted air provide a thriving habitat for a diverse and fascinating array of bird life. The area is a must for the keen amateur or indeed, anyone with even a passing interest in ornithology and distinctive species are likely to be observed on any day out. Water Sports – The nearby Lake Vassiviere, which covers four square miles (6 kms) has activities for children, supervised bathing and boat trips. The more energetic can indulge in sailing, windsurfing, motor boating, water-skiing and pedaloes. Surrounding rivers offer excellent facilities for canoeing or kayaking. Golf – Gentle swathes of green valleys, woods, lakes and open pastureland provide a natural setting for golf courses. There are four attractive and challenging 18-hole courses within an hour’s drive of Pommerol. History and Arts – The region is full of historical interest, from following the Richard the Lionheart route and the ancient St Jacques de Compostella pilgrim routes, to Romanesque abbeys and churches and fascinating châteaux. The Crozant School of Painting previously included Claude Monet who painted over twenty canvases in the area. Travel Information
