Comfortable Country Chambres d'Hotes Bed and Breakfast
St Aulaye, on the Dordogne/Charente border in Southwest France
3 bedrooms with bath or shower
La Gare
La Gare is a turn of the 19th century former station master's house that has been recently renovated and decorated with panache and personality. We offer three bedrooms, all with queen-sized beds and private bathrooms. The suite has an additional single bed for a child. The house nestles on the edge of the charming village of St Aulaye, situated on the beautiful River Dronne, which separates the Dordogne from the Charente, so you can easily enjoy the best of both areas.
The village has three restaurants and there are shops, markets and Romanesque churches in the area, and a Trappist monastery and monolithic church in Aubeterre, 5 minutes away. Just an hour to the west is Bordeaux and the St Emilion vineyards and an hour to the east, is Sarlat and numerous chateaux. Upon arrival, you will find plenty of parking next to the ancient loading dock. Through the white picket fence the change from old to new begins. We have tables with parasols for dining or just watching a game of boules on your own private court. You will be given a key to the main entrance so that you can stay out as late as you like and enjoy the many restaurants, concerts and clubs in the area. Each evening, Alan and Hilary would love to hear about your day over a complimentary glass of champagne at the fish tank bar. The bedrooms are in the upper part of the station house where the station master and his family once lived. Two of the rooms have enormous bath/dressing rooms and views to the rolling hills that lead to the Dronne river. The third bedroom has a private Jacuzzi shower and a view of the village and front courtyard. All the rooms have private bath or shower rooms that are totally modern and new.
Breakfast includes fresh juice, an assortment of fresh pastries and yogurts, coffee, tea or hot chocolate. Each day a different egg dish will be served, from omelettes to quiche and depending on the time of the year, the fruit and preserves will be from our garden. The front garden has tables and a boules court. The back garden has a large picnic table and barbecue grill which guests are welcome to use. We also have in the "engine" garage, a games area with darts and table tennis and in the side garden, a large paddling pool for children and a badminton court. Bicycles are also available. At the back of the property, where the second the platform used to be, we have made two gardens, one for local flowers and the other a vegetable and fruit garden, which we love to share with our guests. The Area
The local golf course, Golf d'Aubeterre Manoir de Longeveau, is only twenty minutes away and the famous Chateau Vigiers Golf Club is an hour. In the forest of the Double you will find many lakes including the large lake of La Jemaye, which is 75 acres of water, nature walks, swimming, picnic facilities and even a disco at night. Besides the River Dronne at your doorstep only 20 minutes away, is Parcoul with a leisure centre complete with water toboggan and water slides. There are many day trips around St Aulaye from the wine country around Bordeaux, including the popular St Emilion and many other vineyards along the way. In the other direction is the "Venice" of France, Brantome with its town encircled by the river, which has many shops and several good restaurants. A little further east is the lovely medieval town of Sarlat, close to the most chateaux in one area than any other region of France and, on the way, are the amazing prehistoric caves of Lascaux.
