Two Country Cottages in the Charente Maritime
Geay, between Saintes and La Rochelle in Western France. With pool.
Each with 1 bedroom, ideal for 1 or 2 people. Plus Farmhouse Bed and Breakfast.
Près du Puits
This charming Charentaise farmhouse is in the hamlet of Le Grand Chevallon in Geay, about 25 minutes drive from Saintes and in the heart of the Charente Maritime. Set in secluded gardens of more than half an acre with a walled swimming pool area, parts of the house are believed to date back to the 1750's. The Cottage and the Bergerie are situated in the grounds of the farmhouse and are ideal for one or two adults with the emphasis on informality, peace and tranquillity.
This part of France has a climate second only to the South of France with generally long, hot summers and mild winters. You can usually eat well here and are never too far from a restaurant. The Charente is famous for its seafood, especially oysters and mussels (good with white Charente wine), cognac and pineau, melons and a variety of cheeses. There is an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables in local shops and markets, succulent lamb and beef from the Marais, sometimes cèpes sent up from Bordeaux. The Cottage is an open plan studio at ground floor level in an attractively converted stable with a real country cottage feel about it. Ideal for those who prefer to be independent, it can be taken with either a double sofa bed or two single beds. The kitchen area has a cooker, fridge and washing machine, there is a table for two, television, CD and radio, and a bathroom with shower. It has its own lawn garden area with furniture and a barbecue and awnings to provide shade and keep the cottage cool on hot days. The Bergerie is also on one level and has been recently converted, decorated and furnished in fresh white and yellow and has its own private garden area with outside furniture and a barbeque. It has a double bedroom and a bathroom with shower and an open plan sitting room with a CD player and kitchen, equipped with a cooker, fridge and washing machine, plus kettle and all necessary pots, pans and utensils.
A Chambres d’Hotes Bed and Breakfast double room is also available in the farmhouse, as an alternative. The room is comfortable and prettily decorated with its own en-suite shower room, and tea and coffee making facilities. Continental breakfast is included in the rate. A walled pool area with an oval pool and a covered terrace is equipped with sun beds and shared.
The Area
The historic town of Saintes, 20 minutes from here, lies on the left bank of the River Charente and has a range of shops and restaurants. Cognac is the home of the world's most famous brandy and the town is completely devoted to it. If you visit the cellars of the major houses, Augier, Martell, Rémy Martin, or Courvoisier in Jarnac to see how it is made, one of the things you will notice is the black staining on many of the buildings, caused by the steady evaporation from millions of barrels of maturing cognac. Pineau is delicious cognac based wine. The Atlantic beaches are only a 30 minutes drive away. Royan has water sports facilities that include windsurfing, sailing, jet skiing and sand yachting. It also has attractive shops, cafés and several good seafood restaurants amongst others. Popular with the sailing fraternity, La Rochelle, 45 minutes, has a wonderful cosmopolitan atmosphere, arcaded streets and beaches in and around the town, easy to reach off shore islands and a superbly well-designed aquarium. The whole area is great for walking, cycling and birdwatching; there are three golf courses to choose from, tennis courts and riding stables within a short drive and fishing in the river 3 km from Près du Puits.
