Secluded Farmhouse with Three Character Gîtes
Montcabrier, near Puy l'Evêque in the Lot, Midi Pyrénées
The Barn, The Breadhouse and The Tower: Each with 1 bedroom, sleeping 2, 3 or 4/6 people.
Fraysse Haut
Set in six hectares of fields and woodland in the pleasant, rolling countryside above the Lot river valley, this is a wonderful base for sightseeing or walking holidays, or for just unwinding in the tranquillity of the countryside. Fraysse Haut is reached by a long track off a quiet country road and you can enjoy many delightful walks in the surrounding area.
The owners, Sheila and Dan, live separately in the main house and are here to help you when necessary, to ensure you make the most of your stay in this beautiful region. We speak both French and English and are well integrated within the friendly local community. Our aim is to provide a convivial atmosphere for individual guests, as well as for parties of family or friends to holiday together in the three gites. In July 2003 we hosted a family reunion to celebrate a 50th wedding anniversary, bringing together four families and three generations, for a unique and memorable occasion. Montcabrier is about 5 kms by road, less by woodland path, and we can highly recommend the traditionally baked bread from the boulangerie in the village. For your self-catering needs, Puy-l'Evêque (5 kms) and Prayssac (8 kms) have a range of shops and weekly markets. Restaurants offer tempting menus, and lunches are excellent value from about 11 euros including wine; a ferme auberge is the place to try home-produced duck and goose dishes, including confit de canard and foie gras. In July and August, villages organise evening markets with barbecues and local specialities to eat in a lively ambience at communal tables. Fraysse Haut has year round attractions. Come in May or June for the wild orchids and bird watching at nesting time; July and August for summer events and village fairs, balmy evenings and stunning night skies. September brings fresh figs, followed by walnuts, chestnuts and the grape harvest. Enjoy flavourful seasonal fruit and vegetables from the markets, and from our garden when available. The Barn is comfortable at any time of year with central heating and a log fire for cosy winter evenings. Three individual guest units sleep from 2 to 4 people each. If booked together they can comfortably provide capacity for 8 to10. Extra beds are available for even larger groups. The buildings are all self-contained and surround a courtyard, with barbecue and seating areas, which opens directly onto fields. The Barn: Sleeps 2 to 4 (or 6, if combined with Tower). A light and bright barn conversion combining character and comfort, featuring a spacious two storey open living area, overlooked by a gallery. We used to live in the Barn, so there are plenty of bookshelves (well stocked with holiday reading) and storage space. The Barn also has under-floor heating and a wood-burning stove, so it is ideal for off-season or winter lets.
The living area has large glazed doors which open onto the sunny courtyard. The newly fitted kitchen is equipped with a fridge/freezer, dishwasher, gas hob and electric oven. There is a cloakroom/utility room with washing machine and a downstairs toilet with shower. Upstairs on the first floor gallery is a double bed and a built-in curtained wardrobe with shelves and hanging space. Off the gallery are a bedroom with twin single beds and a separate bathroom with shower cubicle, wash basin, toilet and bidet. The Barn also has satellite television with a Sky digibox. The Tower: Sleeps 2. Ideal as extra accommodation to the Barn, as cooking facilities are limited. The Tower is on two levels with a panoramic view from the top floor and has lots of windows, white walls and Provencal print curtains, to give a bright, airy feeling. On the first floor, a breakfast/living room is equipped with fridge, microwave, double sink unit and satellite television, and is furnished with table and chairs and a convertible sofa. A solid wood staircase leads to the top floor bedroom with twin single beds and four windows overlooking fields and trees. The compact shower room is freshly tiled and has a screened cubicle shower, a toilet and wash basin. The Breadhouse: Sleeps 2 to 3. This was the farm bakery, (le fournil), now converted into a character small studio with terracotta floor tiles, a pine ceiling and stone walls. The Breadhouse is cool and shady, ideal for the summer heat wave, and all necessary facilities are on the one level off the courtyard. Within the open plan, L-shaped studio is a farmhouse table and chairs, satellite television, a double bed and a dressing area with shelves and hanging space. The tiled shower room has a shower cubicle, toilet, bidet and wash basin. The corner kitchenette has fitted cupboards and a worktop with gas hob, an inset sink and under-counter fridge. An open-tread wood staircase goes up to a mezzanine area with extra storage space and a single bed. A small covered terrace in front of the Breadhouse provides a pleasant area for meals or just sitting and relaxing. The Area
Fraysse Haut is ideal for walkers as it is situated along the GR652, one of the long distance paths criss-crossing France. A network of other footpaths and tracks provide a variety of country walks and scenery with some fine viewpoints over the river valley. There are many enthusiastic walking groups active in the area; a good chance to practice some French with the locals. We offer suggestions for guided or independent walks, and an all-inclusive one week package holiday is available for individuals or groups. To give you a good appetite for the wonderful food of the Lot, among other recreational activities in the vicinity are cycling, tennis, horse riding, swimming pools and lakes, canoeing, fishing, river trips, wine tasting and of course, walking, wild flowers and bird watching which are right on the doorstep. Fraysse Haut is also well situated for sightseeing in the Lot, Dordogne and other neighbouring areas. The Lot has marvellous varied scenery and unspoilt countryside with many charming villages and hidden treasures such as churches with frescoes, natural springs and washing stones, dinosaur footprints, small museums and local craftsmen. Among our recommended places to visit are the imposing hilltop castles of Biron and Bonaguil, the ancient bastides villages of Monflanquin and Monpazier with beautiful arcaded main squares, and Les Arques ("From here you can't see Paris") particularly, the Zadkine museum. Cahors (35 kms) is our nearest main town and is renowned for its wine, the fortified bridge (Pont Valentre) and more recently, its gardens and floral displays in summer. The "vignoble de Cahors" has some 200 vineyards, which produce full-bodied reds and fresh fruity rosés and whites, wonderful wine at affordable prices. Travel Information
