Lovely Provence House with pool in the South of France

4 double bedrooms, sleeps up to 8 people
Le Mas du Castellas
Our house is in the heart of the Alpilles mountain range, 2 km from the village of Maussane, 15 minutes from Saint Rémy de Provence, between Avignon and Arles. This is the Provence of the Rhone, an unbelievably beautiful area with a strong Roman heritage; the landscape of painters such as Van Gogh, Cezanne and Matisse, who came here to capture the extraordinary light and colour. It is a rich agricultural area with rolling plains of fruit orchards, olive groves and a variety of Mediterranean vegetables, alive with the sound of chirping cigales and the intoxicating aroma of a multitude of wild herbs. This is also a thriving cultural region with a succession of events, art exhibitions and festivals celebrating fertility and tradition, culminating in the annual arts festival in Avignon (similar to the Edinburgh Festival).
Maussane is a typical Provencal village with a lovely central square with a fountain, shaded by plane trees and surrounded by café terraces and restaurants. There is a choice of shops including several artisan shops, banks and a lively market every Thursday. Maussane is also known for its fruity, single pressed olive oil that now has its own appellation, which repeatedly wins the medaille d’Or. The variety of top quality olive oil produced here is beginning to make olive oil tasting almost as popular as wine tasting!
The house is set in roughly two acres planted with lavender and rosemary, surrounded by cypress and olive trees with wonderful walks straight into natural countryside. The pool is large and secured to ensure the safety of young children and there is a terrace with a pergola, ideal for lunch in the shade or to simply sit under in the cool of the early mornings or late evenings gazing at the view. The mas has a large, fully equipped kitchen that opens onto the terrace, which includes a dishwasher and washing machine, an oven and hob, microwave and a large fridge with an ice maker. The salon has a fireplace, television and bookcases and leads into a dining room. One of the four double bedrooms is on the ground floor, has an ensuite bathroom and looks out onto the olive trees. The other three bedrooms are upstairs, one has an ensuite bathroom, the other two share a third bathroom. All these rooms have wonderful views over the countryside.
The Area
The area is unusually well provided with good restaurants within reasonable driving distance, which include the Bistrot du Paradou and La Petite France in Le Paradou and at Les Baux, Le Cabre d'Or and the Beau Manoir. Mausanne has Le Margaux or Le Ravi Provencau, both old favourites, or try the Vallon de Gayet in Mouries. In Eygalieres there is the Bistrot Eygalieres and Le Petit Bru. The area also has many excellent local vineyards and Châteauneuf du Pape in the Côte du Rhône region is within an hour’s drive. There are five golf courses in the area, riding stables around the corner, tennis and cycling. Just outside St Remy is a serious gliding centre and a 20 minute flight (costing about 40 euros) gives a fantastic experience and sublime views over the Alpilles. The Mediterranean coast is an easy hour’s drive from here. Fifteen minutes to the North across the Alpilles are fashionable Saint Remy de Provence (birthplace of Nostrodamus) and the extraordinary Greco-Roman ruins of Glanum, close to the asylum where van Gogh spent the last years of his life. Drive another twenty minutes and you arrive in Avignon with its stunning Papal Palace. About an hour's drive from here are many of the Luberon's most attractive villages such as Bonnieux, Gordes, Lacoste, Goult and Lourmarin. Arles is the gateway to the Camargue with its Roman amphitheatre and Forum and association with van Gogh's tumultuous and highly creative time there. Travel Information
