La Bergerie
Guibert is our tiny hill top hamlet surrounded by meadows, woodland and vineyards, 20 minutes walk to the once fortified, medieval village of Issac in the Crempse valley. The village still, fortunately, has a thriving village shop to buy fresh bread in the morning and a bar for refreshment. Bergerac is 17 km from here.
Guibert is at the end of a tiny country lane, so there is no traffic and safe for children. There is a myriad of “chemin rural” or footpaths, criss-crossing through the woods to other tiny hamlets around us. A lovely half hour walk leads you to the ancient Chateau de Montreal, which has spectacular views from the ramparts and a beautiful 18th century interior. La Bergerie was originally the barn in which wine was made and where two huge vats stood, behind which, the local Resistance hid weapons in the last war. Now it has been converted to a lofty, open plan living room, cool in summer with large fireplace with log burning stove keeping the whole room warm in the winter. A long refectory table, comfortable sofas and chairs form a spacious living area with television and DVD, suitable for large parties of people and family alike. The fitted kitchen at one end equipped with all the essential appliances, provides an open feeling and social area to the sitting room while preparing meals.
Above the kitchen and shower room is a mezzanine with double bed, which is good when running at full capacity but not entirely private. French doors from the living room and also one double bedroom open onto a private sun trap terrace and south facing lawn, well protected by the woods that edge them. The bedroom wing has a double bedroom with ensuite bathroom at one end and a further double and twin bedded room sharing a shower room. The swimming pool (8m x 4m) with Roman steps at one end, is surrounded by a child safe fence and terrace and is positioned to capture the sun until the latest possible time in the evening. "We had a simply wonderful week after taking both properties, (Bergerie and Robanson) opening them all up to inter-connect created a brilliant atmosphere with our group! Thank you!" Le Robanson is a converted hay loft attached to La Bergerie with which it is let in high season, otherwise rented separately. Full of character with stone walls, low beams and timber panelling, the living space resembles an alpine chalet. This is perfect for a couple. French doors give an independent access from a private area of garden, and a double set of doors from the living space gives an optional access to La Bergerie. The colourfully furnished living space is open plan apart from the shower room and has a double bed area, that can be curtained off, a single sofa bed and kitchenette. "2 excellent weeks. Second week temperatures 35 degrees! Pool in great demand. Some spectacular thunderstorms at night". The Area
Mussidan, 8 km, is the nearest village for both general and supermarket shopping and has a weekly market plus bars and restaurants. You can hire bicycles in Mussidan and canoeing, indoor and outdoor hard tennis courts, riding stables and golf, are all available locally. Bergerac on the River Dordogne, is a 20 minute cross-country drive and has huge range of shops and one of the best restaurants of the region, the L'Imparfait. The cobbled quays beside the river were once used for loading wine casks onto sailing barques for their journey downstream to Bordeaux, behind which, are beautiful narrow streets and ancient houses. The vineyards of the Bergerac area, which produce both excellent white and red wines, are close to the town and include the well-known sweet white wine of Monbazillac, akin to Sauterne, so there is lots of opportunity to taste. St Emilion is 45 minutes drive. Other lovely villages, such as Issigeac and Monpazier with their arcaded market squares and old fortified village "bastides" such as Domme, perched spectacularly on the limestone cliffs overlooking the river, the old town of Sarlat, the famous caves at Les Eyzies and their prehistoric paintings, and the spectacular river panorama at Beynac, are all about 30 minutes to an hour’s drive.
