Farmhouse and Barn with pool in South West France
Guibert, Issac near Mussidan, 17 km from Bergerac, in the Dordogne
Farmhouse or La Grange: 4 or 3 bedrooms, sleeping 9 or 6 people. Together: 7 bedrooms, sleeping 13.

La Ferme

Guibert is our tiny hill top hamlet surrounded by meadows, woodland and vineyards, 20 minutes walk to the once fortified, medieval village of Issac in the Crempse valley. The village still, fortunately, has a thriving village shop to buy fresh bread in the morning and a bar for refreshment. Mussidan, 8 km, is the nearest village for both general and supermarket shopping and has a weekly market plus bars and restaurants. You can hire bicycles in Mussidan and canoeing, indoor and outdoor hard tennis courts, riding stables and golf, are all available locally. Bergerac is a 20 minute cross country drive from here.

The house is at the end of a tiny country lane, so there is no traffic and safe for children. There is a myriad of “chemin rural” or footpaths criss-crossing through the woods to other tiny hamlets around us. A lovely half hour walk leads you to the ancient Chateau de Montreal, which has spectacular views from the ramparts and a beautiful 18th century interior.

La Ferme is an original 16th century farm house with a delightful, safe and enclosed garden at the front, with a chestnut tree giving shade for dining on hot days and retains a typical French farm house character. The kitchen, bathrooms and atticshave been renovated adding comfort and space without spoiling its rustic ambiance.

A cosy sitting room with lofty beamed ceiling, big open inglenook fire place and rustic clay tiled floor is partly open to the kitchen and dining area with French doors leading out on to the garden. On the same ground floor level is a utility room and wc a large double bedroom with a beautifully finished shower room.

Steep steps lead to the first floor which has a twin, double and a single bedroom, a bathroom with wc and a separate wc with basin.

The swimming pool (10m x 5m) has a terrace and a child safe fence surrounding it with an area of mown grass for games and a further acre of rough mown meadow.

La Grange is a converted barn, a few paces away from La Ferme with which it is let in high season, otherwise rented separately.

Stone steps take you up to the two storey high open plan sitting room with French windows onto a small balcony and a wood burning stove for chilly days in the off season. The kitchen area is fully fitted including dishwasher and microwave. On the same floor there is a double bedded and twin bedded room and shower room.

A staircase from the sitting room leads to the third bedroom, twin bedded, in the roof space, much loved by children.

The swimming pool (10m x 5m) has a terrace and a child safe fence surrounding it with an area of mown grass for games and a further acre of rough mown meadow.

"What can we say, but beautiful holiday - everything we could wish for. Meeting your friendly French lady in the supermarket (Marie-Claire) made you feel like a real local."

The Area

Mussidan, 8 km, is the nearest village for both general and supermarket shopping and has a weekly market plus bars and restaurants. You can hire bicycles in Mussidan and canoeing, indoor and outdoor hard tennis courts, riding stables and golf, are all available locally.

Bergerac on the River Dordogne has a huge range of shops and one of the best restaurants of the region, the L'Imparfait. The cobbled quays beside the river were once used for loading wine casks onto sailing barques for their journey downstream to Bordeaux, behind which, are beautiful narrow streets and ancient houses.

The vineyards of the Bergerac area, which produce both excellent white and red wines, are close to the town and include the well-known sweet white wine of Monbazillac, akin to Sauterne, so there is lots of opportunity to taste. St Emilion is 45 minutes drive.

Other lovely villages, such as Issigeac and Monpazier with their arcaded market squares and old fortified village "bastides" such as Domme, perched spectacularly on the limestone cliffs overlooking the river, the old town of Sarlat, the famous caves at Les Eyzies and their prehistoric paintings, and the spectacular river panorama at Beynac, are all about 30 minutes to an hour’s drive.
