La Ferme
Guibert is our tiny hill top hamlet surrounded by meadows, woodland and vineyards, 20 minutes walk to the once fortified, medieval village of Issac in the Crempse valley. The village still, fortunately, has a thriving village shop to buy fresh bread in the morning and a bar for refreshment. Mussidan, 8 km, is the nearest village for both general and supermarket shopping and has a weekly market plus bars and restaurants. You can hire bicycles in Mussidan and canoeing, indoor and outdoor hard tennis courts, riding stables and golf, are all available locally. Bergerac is a 20 minute cross country drive from here.
The house is at the end of a tiny country lane, so there is no traffic and safe for children. There is a myriad of “chemin rural” or footpaths criss-crossing through the woods to other tiny hamlets around us. A lovely half hour walk leads you to the ancient Chateau de Montreal, which has spectacular views from the ramparts and a beautiful 18th century interior. The Farmhouse has been kept as much as possible as found thirty odd years ago. Bathrooms, and kitchens and converted roof spaces adding comfort and space without spoiling its uniquely rustic French ambiance. Enter the kitchen and you see the enormous old fireplace, much used, the lofty ceiling with very ancient blackened beams and the central dining table over which so much activity takes place. The modern cooker, fridge, dishwasher, washing machine and microwave, being mere modern essentials. The sitting room, off the kitchen, decorated in pale blue, is a cool refuge in summer and with the log fire burning in the Spring and Autumn months of the year, feels really cosy. On the same ground floor level is a twin bedroom and a double bedroom with washbasin and a shower room. Steep steps lead to the first floor which has a twin, double and a single bedroom, a bathroom with toilet and a separate toilet.
La Grange is a converted barn beside the swimming pool, literally paces away from the farmhouse. Stone steps take you up to the two storey high living room, which has a properly fitted kitchen with dishwasher, washing machine and microwave. Twin and double bedrooms, a shower room and a third twin bedroom, much loved by children, are on the top floor. On the ground floor is a games room with tennis table and doors onto the swimming pool garden. A south facing garden in front of the farmhouse has a spreading chestnut tree for shady, lazy, lunches and on the other side, through French doors from the kitchen and living room, the garden with the barbecue catches the last rays of the setting sun. There is plenty of space for games and a second terrace and barbecue by the barn. The farmhouse has electric heating throughout and the barn has a wood burning stove that heats it very effectively if needed. Apart from high season La Ferme and La Grange can be taken separately, but if the swimming pool is in use (June – September) the other part will not be let. The whole property is a very old farmstead with two entirely separate houses with their own swimming pools and private gardens. Taken together, they are ideal for a large family or a group of friends and suitable for group activities such as painting classes or wine appreciation and for family celebrations. Catering for whole periods can be arranged at a daily rate. The Area
Bergerac on the River Dordogne has a huge range of shops and one of the best restaurants of the region, the L'Imparfait. The cobbled quays beside the river were once used for loading wine casks onto sailing barques for their journey downstream to Bordeaux, behind which, are beautiful narrow streets and ancient houses. The vineyards of the Bergerac area, which produce both excellent white and red wines, are close to the town and include the well-known sweet white wine of Monbazillac, akin to Sauterne, so there is lots of opportunity to taste. St Emilion is 45 minutes drive. Other lovely villages, such as Issigeac and Monpazier with their arcaded market squares and old fortified village "bastides" such as Domme, perched spectacularly on the limestone cliffs overlooking the river, the old town of Sarlat, the famous caves at Les Eyzies and their prehistoric paintings, and the spectacular river panorama at Beynac, are all about 30 minutes to an hour’s drive.
