We fell in love with the house as soon as we saw it; its character, the sense of space, the garden and the view. It is situated about a kilometre from the little village of Castelmoron on the River Lot, a friendly place that remains unspoilt and goes about its business as it has always done. Opposite the beautiful church is the central square with a fountain, which comes alive on market days (Wednesday), where there is a very good general store and delicatessen. Further along the main street is a large boules playing area shaded by plane trees, a game that is taken very seriously here, which is used daily and is the venue for frequent tournaments.
The village also has a bank, boulangerie and post office, a country antiques shop and a charming maze of little back streets. Near the bridge that takes you over the river as you leave, is a small sandy beach with a designated swimming area and further along is a port de plaisance where you can hire boats in summer and idle down the river as far as Villeneuve-sur-Lot. The house is large with a big country kitchen with a dining table and chairs, equipped with a dishwasher and washing machine amongst other things. There is also a dining room and two salons.
There are ten bedrooms in total, some double, some single, which can comfortably sleep up to 15 people. Six of the rooms have a washbasin and bidet and there are two bathrooms and a shower room and two separate wc's. There is long terrace with steps that lead down into the garden and outside furniture. Behind the house is a walled swimming pool garden, which is ideal for outside eating. The pool has Roman steps and a depth of two meters. The Area
Within minutes of Castelmoron, you can be in deep country. Monclar is an ancient hilltop village about 10 minutes away that has sublime views and several restaurants. On the way to Verteuil is the Chaudron Magique, a goat farm with a marvellous farm shop that sells a variety goat's cheese and mohair sweaters. Children can see the kids in season and even help with the milking. About 13 km away is a golf course with a Pro Shop at Tombeboeuf. Villeneuve sur Lot is a relaxed market town on the river about 30 minutes away with pavement cafes, theatre and cinema, a large market on Saturday mornings and dozens of restaurants ranging from traditional to Italian and Moroccan. Just outside the town is medieval Pujols, set high on a hill, which has two or three excellent restaurants. Beyond Villeneuve is Penne d'Agenais, another 13th century bastide, crowned by a shining basilica. Travel Information
