Bed and Breakfast in an 18th Century Presbytery
Saint Manvieu Bocage, near Vire, in Calvados, Normandy
Two double bedrooms and a family suite with bathrooms.
La Maison du Bocage
Our house is in the peaceful village of Saint Manvieu Bocage in the Calvados region of Normandy; a happy haven that's home from home, set in its own grounds with a pretty walled garden. The pace of life here is calm and relaxed. Five minutes away by car, is Lake Dathée, a perfect location for water sports, a game of golf or a leisurely walk. Our nearest town is Vire, known as the capital of Normandy, which has amiable bars and restaurants, a busy market, theatre, shops and museum.
Originally, the church presbytery, this 18th century house has been lovingly restored to provide comfortable bed and breakfast accommodation in a friendly, family environment. This is open house all year round, ideal for a golfing break, a change of scene for a few days, family holidays, house hunting or as a stop over for a night or two, on the way to and from the South. We are English and French speaking and will do our utmost to ensure that your stay here is relaxing and memorable and we look forward to welcoming you. The house and grounds are suitable for children and our rooms are versatile, suitable for both couples and families. There is one ensuite double bedroom with a side room with bunk beds and two ensuite double rooms, which can be interconnecting if required. All the bedrooms are decorated to a high standard and have beautiful views of the gardens or surrounding village and all have ample space for an extra bed or a cot. Each room has tea and coffee making facilities and a homemade welcome treat is provided on arrival. A hairdryer is available on request.
Guests have the use of a large lounge with television and DVD, board games and children’s toys. Breakfast includes fresh breads and pastries from our local boulangerie, complimented by homemade preserves and fruit compotes. A hearty four course dinner including wine or cider is available on request. Evening meals vary between Rémy’s French cooking and Debbie’s more English style of cooking, both of which we know you would enjoy. Breakfast and dinner is usually served either in the dining room or in the garden. There is plenty of room for the children to let off steam; we have even added a play area in the garden. We can provide cots, highchairs and even a fridge in your room if required. If you want to venture out on your own for some well deserved grown up time, then we are able to arrange a baby sitter if need be.
The Area
La Maison du Bocage is right in the heart of the village, next to ‘Le Saint Manvieu’ our local bar and general store, where Martine and Jean-Claude serve a traditional daily lunch menu for about 10 euros. Opposite, is the church and village green, which is a great spot for a picnic, if you do not want to go too far. Wandering around the village is a delightful discovery of farm animals and stunning views of the Bocage countryside. Saint Sever is about 5 minutes away, home of the Crown Forest, perfect for picnics and exploring. The huge Lake Dathée offers many water sports including catamaran, windsurfing, canoeing, pedalos and fishing. The Golf de Vire is a 18-hole golf course on the edge of Lake Dathée, open all year round, or try a four wheel drive experience within view of the lake. Aquavire in Vire has three pools with indoor and outdoor slides, or if you are feeling adventurous, go bungy jumping at the Souleurve viaduct. Within a pleasant hour’s drive are places like Villedieu les Poeles, a bell foundry town since the 12th century, which still makes bells for churches and ships world wide, as well as copper pots and pans. Caen or Bayeux, famous for its tapestry, the beautiful port of Honfleur, the D-Day Landing Beaches, the island cathedral of Mont Saint Michel on the West coast and Granville, its beaches and seafood restaurants, are others. There is so much more and we will be happy to help with ideas, directions and restaurant reservations.
