Bed and Breakfast in the Charente Maritime
Montendre, between Royan, Angouleme and Bordeaux
Double and Family rooms with en suite shower rooms. Dinner available on request.

Montplaisir

Montplaisir was built about 140 years ago and is very typical of the 19th century bourgeois houses in this southern part of the Charente Maritime. The house is on the edge of Montendre, set in over two acres of lawns with shady wooded areas for lazing away on a hot summer's day or enjoying a balmy evening. We have here, three very comfortable guest rooms, including a family room, all with en suite bathrooms and an ideal location for holidaying in this glorious part of France or as a stop over for a night or two, on the way to and from Spain. Everything is at hand, the area is swamped with beauty and history, vineyards that produce wine, pineau and cognac, beaches, lovely countryside and a sense of well being.

Montendre caters very much for families and the facilities also include a nine-hole golf course and a beautiful lake sprawling amongst the pines at the edge of the forest with a beach and supervised swimming for the youngsters. There is also boating and quiet places to fish, picnic areas, an open air swimming pool, a children's playground and a restaurant. Royan, Angouleme, Auberterre and Talmont, Cognac, St Emilion and Bordeaux are all within easy driving distance.

The house has spacious rooms with high ceilings and we have kept the style of decor and furnishing as traditional as possible, while modernising it to ensure maximum comfort for our guests. There is a guest sitting room with television covering both French and English channels (Sky for those who cannot miss their favourite soap!). Fax and Internet connection are available for those who wish to communicate with the outside world.

Bedroom 1 has a double bed, plenty of wardrobe space, bedside tables with reading lamps and is large enough to accommodate an extra single bed if required.

Bedroom 2 consists of a pine double bed and adult size pine bunk beds, making it suitable for a family or a group of four adults travelling together.

Bedroom 3 is also a large room with a high backed double bed, wardrobe and dressing table with double doors opening onto the balcony.

Bedroom 4 has a double bed with a wardrobe and an en-suite bathroom with bath and overhead shower, washbasin and toilet. Double doors open onto the balcony at the front of the property.

All the rooms have a hospitality tray tea with coffee making facilities and en suite bathrooms equipped for electric razor and hairdryer with a shower, washbasin and wc.

Breakfast is included, served in the dining room and consist of a selection of juices, choice of cereals, fruit, yoghurt, croissants, a selection of cold meats, tea or coffee. Dinner is also available on request and includes a pineau aperitif, starter, main course and dessert with a pitcher of red or white wine, tea or coffee to finish and a digestive.

The grounds extend over two acres of lawns running down to an area shaded by massive oak trees with tables and chairs on the lawn and under the trees. Children have plenty of room to run around and play games.

The Area

Sporting activities such as riding stables and a pony club, golf, tennis, boating and fishing, miles of cycling and rambling trails in and around the surrounding forests, others like archery, clay pigeon shooting, a climbing wall and a flying club and can be found either in Montendre or within a short drive. The Antilles de Jonzac, an aquatic centre, 25 minutes from here, is a true swimming experience. The centre has a wave machine and sloping 'beach' helter-skelter water slides, bars and restaurants and makes a superb day out for the whole family.

Montendre has an open air street market full of local produce every Tuesday morning, after which most people meet for a coffee or a drink at the Bar de l'Avenue. On Thursday evenings in July and August, there is an evening market where one can find local crafts and the air is filled with the tempting aroma of food cooked on stalls. One can choose from a range of dishes and enjoy a hearty meal, washed down with locally made wine, eat at tables set out under the trees and listen to live music.

The chateau in the middle of the village has a museum with ancient traditional costumes that traces the history of Montendre and brings it alive. At the top of the chateau, you can see for miles. The brocante country antiques place is interesting to drop into and gives an insight into past lives. Maybe you will find a treasure to take home with you.

There are several restaurants in Montendre where you can find a friendly welcome and a satisfying meal. The town is surrounded by vineyards, who welcome visitors and will be happy to show you around and offer a sample of their wine, cognac or delicious pineau; something else to take home.

Royan and St George de Didonne have some of the best beaches on the West coast. Cognac, where you can visit the great cognac houses of Martell and Remy Martin, Auberterre and Tamont, St Emilion and Bordeaux are all about an hour from here.
