Country Cottage and Barn in the Loire Valley
Monthou-sur-Cher, between Tours and Blois
5 bedrooms, sleeping up to 12 people. With pool, tennis court and private fishing.
The cottage and the barn beside the pool, are on part of a large farming estate with several lakes, situated on the edge of Monthou-sur-Loire, roughly 30 minutes from Tours and Blois and within reach of several of the great Loire châteaux and vineyards. We have recently had the cottage and barn completely renovated by artisans using traditional materials in keeping with the original style and put in a new tennis court, which you are welcome to use. The lakes are stocked with a mixture of carp, pike and roach among others and there are a number of secluded places from which to spend a quiet day fishing.
Monthou is a relatively small village with an 11th century church and an enchanting château, Gué Péan, our nearest neighbour. Although private, the château is open to visitors. We will be happy to help you with anything you need to know about the area and suggest restaurants and local vineyards, which you can visit to taste and buy wine direct. The village has a boulangerie and a butcher, a post office and a newspaper shop. A greater choice of shops can be found in Montrichard, 15 km from here, also at Saint Aignan or Contres, which have markets full of goodies on Monday and Friday mornings.
Awarded 4 épis and 4 stars for comfort and charm, the cottage has a huge, open plan dining room with a kitchen area, furnished with a large table and chairs to seat up to twelve people. The kitchen is very well equipped with everything necessary, including an oven, a hob with six plates, a fridge/freezer, microwave and dishwasher, a kettle, toaster, coffee maker and various other appliances, as well as pots, pans, plates, bowels and glasses. The sitting room is comfortably furnished with sofas and chairs, books, games, television, DVD, a music system and a stone built fireplace (logs provided when necessary).
There are three bedrooms in total in the cottage and a suite of two communicating bedrooms with a bathroom, in the barn by the pool, for those who prefer a little peace and privacy.
Sequoias has a double bed and a writing desk, a cupboard and two chairs with an en suite bathroom with bath, washbasin and wc. Cedres has a double bed with a writing desk, a cupboard and two chairs. Frenes has twin beds, a bureau, a cupboard and two chairs. These two rooms share a bathroom with bath, shower, washbasin and wc. A hairdryer is available.
Of the two bedrooms in the barn, one is a double, the other has twin beds and bunk beds, ideal for children. The bathroom communicates directly with the bedrooms and has a bath, a large shower and double washbasins.
The barn has a large covered terrace with big windows overlooking the pool and towards the cottage, which can be used for games or as a poolside dining area.
The swimming pool measures 10 x 5 metres with large steps and a shallow end for children. It has a safety alarm system for young children when not in use and a cover, is terraced and equipped with sunbeds and teak pool side furniture. From here, you can see one of the lakes in the distance and sometimes in the evenings, deer grazing.
The riding stables at Château Gué Péan next door, welcomes children and adults of all levels of expertise and organises wildlife discovery treks through the forest and also offers courses for beginners, jumping and dressage, by the week, or by the day or half day. If you can bring your own horse, they provide stabling and feed at a small daily rate.
The Cheverny and Cour-Cheverny vineyards around Blois on the south bank of the Loire, carry the Cheverny appellations and welcome visits. Some of the best these wines comes from Chitenay. Many of the Gris-Meunier and Touraine wines are quite special and not widely exported, so are worth looking for and trying. Food is one of the treasures of the Loire and you can find good restaurants in Muides-sur-Loire, Saint-Dyé-sur-Loire or Cheverny. Highly recommended is the two star Michelin restaurant, Lion d'Or at Romorantin.
