Charming Chateau Tower House in Southwest France
Soumensac, between Bergerac and St Emilion, in the Lot-et-Garonne
2 bedrooms, sleeps 4 people

La Tour

The 17th century tower is in the grounds of a family chateau in the village of Soumensac, situated in the Lot et Garonne, close to the Dordogne and the Gironde borders. It has great authenticity and charm and has been made into a delightful private guest house that is surrounded by beautiful, chateau gardens, full of peonies and roses in May and June, followed by jasmine and fragrant heliotropes, olive and lemon trees, divided into different areas by small box hedges and pittosporums.

Soumensac is in an area of orchards and vines, fields of corn, summer sunflowers and tender spring vegetables, 11 kms from Duras and 30 kms from Bergerac. The village has a post office and a weekly Sunday morning market. Eymet, a medieval bastide village about 7 kms away has more shops, banks, several restaurants and, an evening market during the summer, which is a great social gathering place.

Stone steps from the tower lead to the gate into the tower garden, which is sunny and peaceful, shaded by a judas tree, medlars, Japanese cherry trees and hazelnuts, surrounded by a laurel hedge. The terrace windows open straight into the main room, which has a sitting room area by the fireplace. The kitchen has large worksurfaces and is fully equipped with dishwasher and washing machine, oven and hob.

Stairs lead to the first floor where there is a large, light double room with views of the chateau and gardens, and a bathroom with shower. The second floor has a charming twin bedroom. The tower is entirely furnished with personal, original family furniture and mementoes. We look forward to welcoming you here.

The Area

There is a lake at St Sernin with water sports facilities (not water skiing), a sandy beach, picnic areas, cafés and riding stables. For golfers, there is an excellent 18-hole country club course with a restaurant at Monestier (15 kms), which offers temporary membership. You can even take sculpture courses held nearby, which welcome everyone from beginners to professionals.

Duras is a thriving medieval market town, where there is a good selection of shops, restaurants and cafés, a particularly good hotel restaurant and a fine XIII century château with a museum. During the summer months the town has a succession of festivals and events, including concerts held at the château and an annual hot-air balloon rally. Many of the surrounding villages also have open air concerts varying from jazz to classical music, vide greniers (bric-a-brac fairs) and son et lumiere events.

The area is also known for its Côtes de Duras wines and there are dozens of local vineyards, all of whom produce a range of red, white or rosé wines. Visitors are very welcome to look around, taste and buy directly.

Within reasonable driving distance is the old village of Saint Emilion, surrounded by the vineyards that produce its great grands crus wines and beyond there, are the Bordeaux vineyards. Further into the Dordogne valley are ancient riverside towns and villages and amazing prehistoric caves, all of which really needs time and more than a day to see.
