Stunning House with infinity pool in Provence
Les Baux de Provence, near St-Rémy, between Arles and Avignon
La Bergerie: 4 bedrooms, sleeps 6/8 people
Set in ten hectares, Baubesse nestles in the beautiful Alpilles hills close to Les Baux-de-Provence, an ancient village perched high on a crag, a short drive from St-Rémy-de-Provence.
The house is surrounded by pine and mulberry trees, cypresses and oaks with wonderful views on all sides. Behind is a fine olive grove and in front, the view stretches over unspoiled countryside to where the Mediterranean can be glimpsed on the horizon. The garden around the secluded swimming pool on one side of La Bergerie, is planted with lavender and rosemary and surrounded by wild mountain landscape. The infinity pool is solar heated and there is a poolside fridge for cool drinks.
Five minutes away by car you can shop in the village of Maussane, which has grocery stores, a butcher and a bakery, as well as a bank, a post office and even a couple of hairdressers. The big main square there is lined with shady plane trees and is a pleasant spot to sip a pastis on a café terrace. Les Baux is a short walk away and well worth a visit to see the magnificent ruins of the medieval château there. It is a very popular place and has lots of shops selling local handicrafts, herbs and perfumes.
La Bergerie has thick walls built of bleached local stone, which keep it wonderfully cool. The kitchen has all modern conveniences, including two fridges and a deep freeze, a dishwasher and washing machine, oven and hob and all essential gadgets.
There are three bedrooms with double beds and their own bathrooms and a small children's room with bunk beds.
The living room/dining room is spacious and L-shaped with a large stone fireplace, which I hope you won't need, television and video and CD/ cassette hi-fi. There is a piano and lots of books to read. Linen and crockery are supplied, as well as six hours a week cleaning services.
Outside is a small courtyard patio where you can eat under a mulberry tree, its branches spreading like a parasol to provide some shade.
La Bergerie has several guidebooks, local literature and general useful information.
There is something for the whole family in this part of Provence. Nearby are riding stables, tennis courts and a golf course 5 minutes away. The nearest beach is 30 minutes from here.
The old Roman towns of Arles, (15 kms), Avignon (30 kms) and St-Rémy-de-Provence are an easy drive away and have lots of shops and a good choice of restaurants. St-Rèmy is the closest and has a market every Wednesday morning, also a very good supermarket.
The Camargue, just near Arles, is full of wildlife, particularly for bird watchers and has long sandy beaches. There are also excellent seafood restaurants in Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.
