Traditional Dordogne Country House with pool
Saint Michel de Montaigne, between St Emilion and Bergerac
5 bedrooms, sleeps 9 people
Domaine de Perreau
The domaine is an old vineyard, which has been in our family now for four generations. The house very much a home that is furnished with old family furniture yet has all modern comforts. St Michel de Montaigne is a peaceful hamlet, where the business of making wine goes on much as it has always done. We are close to where the Dordogne border meets the Gironde, between Ste Foy la Grande and Castillon la Bataille, where there are shops, supermarkets and weekly farmers markets. St Emilion and Bergerac are both about a half hour drive from here. Bordeaux is 70 km.
The ground floor of the house has a large living room/dining room with a big fireplace, sofas and television and a big family table. It open into the kitchen, which is fully equipped with everything you would need including a dishwasher and washing machine, an oven and a fridge. There is also a double bedroom and a bathroom with shower and a separate wc.
Upstairs are four other bedrooms, two double bedrooms, one twin rom and a fourth bedroom with a large single bed. There is a bathroom with shower and separate wc's. Outside is a terrace with garden furniture and a barbecue, which looks onto a private courtyard shaded by trees. The swimming pool (8 x 4 metres) is fenced and there is a climbing frame for the children in the garden.
The Area
Every day there is a local market in somewhere in the area, sometimes held in the evening when it is cooler, where you can find foie gras, local wines, wonderful vegetables and cheese. For golfers there is a first class championship course at Château des Vigiers, close to Ste Foye la Grande and a there is a lake within a short drive where you can swim safely and fish. If you like shopping, flea-markets (brocante), jazz concerts or just wandering around a lovely riverside town, then you will love Bergerac. It is a lovely old port on the Dordogne river, still with its quays, a beautiful bridge and has excellent shops, supermarkets, restaurants and a large country market on Saturday morning. The jazz concerts, in summer every Wednesday, are free and the restaurants in the old quarter have good menus offering a choice of local dishes, at very reasonable prices. St Emilion not only produces fine wines but is a pretty village built on a small hill overlooking the river and pleasant to walk around through narrow, cobbled streets and perhaps visit the wine museum and stop somewhere for lunch. Visits to the St Emilion vineyards can be arranged from there. Look for the mouthwatering macaroons and a distinctive chocolate mousse laced with rum made and sold in one of the specialist shops in the town. Travel Information
