Comfortable Villa Studio for Two with Pool
Near Uzès, 35 kms from Avignon in South France
1 mezzanine bedroom, sleeps 2 people
Le Studio
The studio is part of a typical Provençal house situated peacefully in countryside, 5 kms from the lovely old village of Uzès. It is entirely independent and makes a charmingly comfortable base for two. Uzès is a 15th century village, pleasant to walk around that has many fine 17th and 18th century buildings, shops and galleries, restaurants and cafés. The Saturday morning market in the arcaded square is a great meeting place and brings people from miles around. You can find all kinds of local produce; fresh fruit and vegetables, olives and cheeses, flowers and wine, as well as stalls selling clothes and shoes, or kitchen utensils.
The Gard stretches from the Cevennes Mountains in the north down to the Mediterranean coast, both 60 kms away. Arles is 45 kms from here, Nimes 30 km, Avignon 35 km. The Studio is open plan, light, sunny and prettily furnished with views of the terrace and pool. It has television and a hi-fi and the kitchen is equipped with an oven and hob and a fridge. The bathroom has a shower, washbasin and wc.
The cosy mezzanine bedroom has a double bed and a cot or single bed is available on request. The garden has shady spots and garden furniture and the swimming pool (4 x 8 metres) is terraced.
The Area
There are tennis courts and riding stables within walking distance, a golf course 5 kms away and numerous cycling routes. The brave can canoe kayak through the stunning Verdon gorges, 10 kms from here. The beaches along the Mediterranean are about an hour's drive. Ancient Avignon lies on the banks of the Rhône and has a lovely southern air about it. There is a greater choice of shops and restaurants and the town has several festivals and events throughout the year, including an international music and theatre festival in July. A day can easily be spent just walking around seeing the riches of Arles. They are everywhere. The Roman obelisk in the place de la République made from Egyptian stone, the church of St Trophime with its famous façade and cloisters around an enchanting garden, the remarkably well preserved amphitheatre or the Van Gogh museum. Nîmes (28 kms) has an 18-hole golf course and lots of shops and restaurants. The city has some excellent museums and its own Roman amphitheatre, not as large as the one in Arles, but still used for mock gladiator fights and chariot races and various other events. Try to see the ornamental 18th century gardens in the quai de la Fontaine, which also has a ruined Temple of Diana. The Tour Magne nearby, an octagonal watchtower built in the 1st century, has wonderful views from the top. A total contrast is the wild natural beauty of the Cevennes hills, peppered with underground caves, some as big as a cathedral. Or the Camargue on the coast, a rice farming, wild life reserve with pink flamingos and if you are lucky enough to see them, herds of wild horses and bulls. There are some good seafood restaurants in Saintes Marie de la Mer. Travel Information
