Two Cottages in Brittany, North West France
Riec-sur-Belon between Lorient and Quimper
1 bedroom each, sleeping 3/5 and 4/6 people
Keraoret
This lovely old traditional Breton house has been made into two adjoining cottages situated in Riec-sur-Belon in south Finistere, in a quiet corner of true Brittany. Surrounded by garden and countryside, it is 4 kms from the nearest village shops and only 15 kms from the sea.
Concarneau (20 kms) has a larger selection of shops and is a busy fishing port. The Ville Close, as the old walled town is called, is picturesque in the extreme, linked to the main town by a small ferry and a fortified bridge. There are good views over the port and the town from the ramparts and the long single central street is lined with creperies and shops. The small fishing museum there has boats and pieces illustrating local history. Moëlan-sur-Mer (6 kms) has a lively market on Tuesday mornings. Port-Aven, a short drive away, snuggles below beech and chestnut covered hills. The countryside around here is particularly attractive; hedgerows, curving lanes and woods and rocky river banks. Once there were as many watermills as houses, but only a few are left now. Kerdruc is a charming little port and Kerascoët has several of the thatched farm cottages that remain in this area. Raguenès-Plage is a small village with several beaches and Port-Manech is a delightful little fishing cove with a sheltered beach.
Gîte 1 has an open plan living room/dining room with a fireplace and television and a corner kitchen equipped with and oven and hob, dishwasher and washing machine, fridge, microwave and coffee machine. There is also a sofa bed and a dining table for six. Upstairs is a large bedroom with a double and a single bed. The bathroom has a bath, washbasin and wc. Outside is a courtyard, where almost total silence reigns with garden furniture, sunbeds and a barbecue. Gîte 2 has a large living room with a kitchen/dining area equipped with dishwasher and washing machine, oven and hob, fridge, microwave and coffee machine. It too has a sofa bed and television. Upstairs is a large bedroom with a double and two single beds. The bathroom has a shower, washbasin and wc. Outside is a large garden terrace with garden furniture, sunbeds and a barbecue.
The Area
There is a golf course in Ploëmeur (20 kms), sea or river fishing and several riding stables within 10 kms of here. You can find lots of good seafood restaurants all along the coast and you can't go without trying our Breton crêpes and sweet galettes pancakes, best with a glass of local cider! Pont-Aven attracted many artists in the late 19th century, Paul Gauguin and Emile Bernard among them, who evolved a new style of painting expressive of Breton life in the area then. You can still follow a walk through the Bois de l'Amour up on the hill above Avon, where many of the paintings of the Pont-Aven School were conceived. Quimper (40 kms), famous for its distinctive colourful pottery, is further inland and has an attractive old centre with timber-framed houses, cobbled streets and occasionally on market day, women in traditional costume selling pottery and lace.
