Chambres d'Hôtes In An 18th Century Bastide
Lorgues, near Salernes in the Provence Var, South of France

La Bastide du Pin
The bastide is typical of many of the lovely old houses in the Var and there is a great sense of peace and timelessness here. Set in two hectares of gardens surrounded by arcades of cypress trees, it has exceptional views of the Massif des Maures hills and the olive groves. The light in this part of the Var is particularly luminous and as the day passes, it plays across the ancient stones and through the rooms, so that they are ever changing. The garden has lots of secluded places where you can relax undisturbed and the pool is terraced and equipped with sunbeds. Both the house and the gites have all modern comforts and are wonderfully cool in summer and warm in winter.
We are just over a kilometre from Lorgues, a pleasant small town with a range of shops, a lively market every Tuesday morning and a choice of a dozen restaurants, including the excellent 'Bruno', king of the truffle! There are also many others in the area from country auberges to gastronomic, where you can eat in the evenings under the stars. The Chambres d'Hôtes Bed and Breakfast rooms all have private bathrooms, television and are decorated in traditional Provençal fabrics and colours and furnished with hand painted country furniture.
The large living room/dining room in the house has polished ochre walls and is comfortable and welcoming. The library, resolutely mauresque in style, has a piano, which music lovers are welcome to use, and there is also a billiard table. The two Gites are completely separate from the house and ideal for those who prefer to be private and independent. They are colourfully painted, comfortable and have fully equipped kitchens, which include a dishwasher and washing machine, a small oven and hob, a microwave and fridge. Upstairs, they have two bedrooms, one double and one with bunk beds. The bathroom has a shower and wc. The gardens are there to be enjoyed and there is a sunny patio with stone steps leading down to the swimming pool and lawn. The Area
The Var has about ten golf courses to choose from within a 20 km radius, the nearest is at St Endreol. The spectacular Gorges du Verdon are an hour's drive and St Tropez is 60 kms from here. The nearest beaches at St Raphaël, St Aygulf and Fréjus are about 35 km away. There are some lovely trails through the forest of Thoronet, where you can walk, cycle and ride, or take a moment to visit the old Cistercian Abby and monastery hidden in the woods there. Salernes, 10 minutes, is famous for its wrought iron artisans and for making earthenware floor tiles. There is also a 17th century château with gardens attributed to Le Nôtre. The countryside here is especially beautiful everywhere you look. Many of the vineyards that produce Côtes de Provence wines are nearby and you can visit the cellars in Lorgues to sample some of them, or visit the vineyards themselves in Taradeau and at the pretty medieval village of Arcs.
