Two Cottages in a Normandy Longhouse
Beside Lake Dathée, 5 kms from Vire in Calvados
The Large Cottage: 6 bedrooms, sleeps 19/25. The Small Cottage: 2 bedrooms, sleeps 5.
La Ferme de la Bougerie
Dating from the 18th century, the Longhouse has been beautifully restored into two independent cottages and is in an exceptionally lovely valley situation overlooking Lake Dathée, surrounded by lush, unspoiled countryside. Two minutes away, just beyond the lake, is a good 9-hole golf course.
Vire, 5 kms away, is a pleasant historic town, where you can stroll around and visit the castle and churches, the museum and the old Clock Tower Gate. There are lots of shops, a weekly market, a choice of restaurants with reasonably priced menus and cafe terraces where you can sample the Cider and Calvados apple brandy for which this area is famous. An easy hour's drive from here are the great island cathedral of Mont St Michel, Bayeux and the Normandy Landing Beaches. The Large Cottage is particularly spacious and well equipped with six bedrooms and a mezzanine area and is ideal for a large family or group of friends.
There are three double bedrooms on the first floor with en suite shower rooms, a landing with a seating area that has a sofa bed, pool table, television and DVD and a large mezzanine with two more sofa beds, chairs and a shower room with wc. The second floor has a children's dormitory with two double beds and three bunk beds, a bedroom with two single beds and a shower room and a third bedroom above the mezzanine with two double beds, a single bed and a put-u-up bed if needed. The salon's beamed ceilings and honey stone walls give it great charm and it is comfortably furnished with two sofas (one a sofa bed), satellite television, video and a hi-fi. There is also a large dining room with a hi-fi system that can seat up to 40 people. The kitchen is equipped to cater for 40 people and has an oven and hob, dishwasher, a microwave and two refrigerators. There are extra two wc's and a washing machine and ironing facilities. Outside is a large terrace with garden furniture overlooking the lake and surrounding countryside. The Small Cottage is part of the Longhouse but completely self-contained and independent and makes a comfortable base for up to five people. It has an open plan living room with satellite television and kitchen/dining area equipped with an oven and hob and refrigerator, amongst other things. There is also a wc with washing machine. Upstairs are two double bedrooms and a shower room. The terrace faces south with views and has an outside table and chairs. Both cottages may be taken together.
The Area
The town of St Sever on the edge of the forest has a variety of shops including a pharmacy and a market on Saturday mornings with lots of local produce. There is also a swimming pool, which is open to everyone and trails to walk or cycle through the forest. The lively seaside town of Granville is just over half an hour's drive away. Here you can relax on the beach, or enjoy good restaurants and various entertainments, including a casino. There are daily ferries during the summer to the the island of Jersey, which takes an hour. The Normandy Landing Beaches, with their beautifully kept monuments and museums, Bayeux and its famous tapestry depicting the Norman conquest of England in 1066 and the charming old copper bell foundry town of Villedieu-les-Poeles, are all within reach.
