Chambres d'Hôtes Bed and Breakfast In An Ancient Priory
Tourtoirac, 25 km north of Périgueux, in the Dordogne, SW France
5 double rooms. Dinner available. Swimming pool.
Le Prieuré de Saint Michel de la Pendule
The Priory has been in existence since the Crusades and is in an exceptional situation overlooking the Isle and Auvézére Valley with 360 degree views across the countryside. It is 4 km from the small market town of Tourtoirac, which lies the banks of the Auvézére, one of the Dordogne's prettiest but least known rivers. Excideuil, 10 km away, a picturesque, medieval market town in an area of gentle hills and woodland, orchards and farms, has a church, tennis courts, restaurants, a supermarket and an excellent baker.
Quiet, unspoilt and uncrowded, the countryside around here is ideal for walking and cycling. The GR 646 passes near to the Priory and other routes take you through hills with spectacular views and into hidden valleys and forests. The Dordogne is without question one of the most beautiful regions in France. The hills and valleys are a lush mixture of fields and woods, vineyards, walnut groves and orchards, maize and sunflowers. Towering chateaux, red-tiled villages and ancient towns scatter a landscape steeped in history from prehistoric times, spanning the Roman conquest, to the the great age of the Troubadours. There is so much to see and do in the area, from exploring the prehistoric caves at Lascaux and Les Eyzies, the great châteaux fortresses and ancient villages, to just relaxing in the summer sun. The lakes for swimming and boating are excellent and fascinating sights and museums are found throughout the region.
The Priory has five double bedrooms. One of the rooms has a private bathroom and the other four bedrooms share two other bathrooms, one between two bedrooms. An extra children's bed in one of the bedrooms can be arranged on request. There is a television room and a living room and dining room, where breakfast is served. Dinner ranging from simple to gastronomic is available on request. Perigourd is famous for foie gras, duck, truffles, wine and cheese, and friendly hospitality. During the long, warm summer evenings, it is usually served outside. The Priory has 13 hectares of fields and woods to roam through and a charming Curate's Garden, which is quiet and restful. There is also access to a swimming pool.
The Area
You are bound to come across a market going on somewhere in one of the villages and there are many reasonably priced restaurants wherever you go. Sorges (10km) is the centre for truffles here and you can buy duck and foie gras direct from many of the local farms. The village of Hautefort (8 kms) is worth a detour to see the beautiful 17th century château, as fine as any in the Loire Valley. Despite its great size, Hautefort is an elegant building set in a lovely 30 hectare park with superb formal gardens in classical French style. The little island town of Brantôme, a pretty drive north of here, is circled by two arms of the River Dronne. The old ivy covered houses, the bridges, the weeping willows and the old abbey tucked under the cliff give it great charm and it's a pleasant place to stop for lunch and walk around.
