Secluded Cottage in the Aveyron, Midi Pyrenees
Near Najac, 45 minutes from Rodez, in South West France
2 bedrooms, sleeps 3/5 people
Le Roucan
This charming 18th century Aveyron farm is tucked away in a valley that breathes peace and quiet, surrounded by a garden that looks out over beautiful meadows and woods. Every window (even the bathroom) has lovely views. We are both artists who live in the main house next to the gite, who have renovated the farmhouse and cottage in the traditional way, in harmony with the surroundings. The Viaur river, 4 kms away, is fantastic for swimming in natural surrounding, fishing and canoeing. The valley also has many wonderful walks that take you through a wilderness far away from modern life. La Fouillade, a short drive from here, is our nearest village and has all essential shops, which carry most things.
The countryside both here and around the River Aveyron is spectacular and unspoilt. Of all the feudal castles in France, Najac (12 km), has perhaps, the most romantic setting. It stands on a conical rock, which plummets down to the River Aveyron far below. It is a mesmerising sight from wherever you look at it, whether it is as you walk down the long market place, lined with medieval houses that leads to the castle, or from the hill opposite, or from the river below. Rodez is 45 minutes, Toulouse is 90 minutes from here. The gite, is completely self contained and has its own private garden terrace with a barbecue and teak garden furniture, where it is pleasant to relax in the evenings with a glass of Gaillac wine and watch the sunset. The ground floor has an open plan living room with a wood burning stove, television and a dining table with double doors opening onto the terrace and garden. The kitchen area includes an oven and hob, a washing machine and a fridge. We provide basic 'welcome' provisions and a complimentary bottle of wine for your arrival.
Upstairs, a sunny landing divides the two bedrooms and the shower room. The double bedroom has a large wardrobe and beautiful distant views. The smaller bedroom has a smaller double bed and an a lovely old armoire and looks onto both the courtyard and the wood. Both have fans. There is also a third mezzanine bedroom with a single bed, in what was once the old chestnut drying room beside the gite. The Area
Villefranche de Rouergue (22 km) is a 13th century bastide, which has a charming maze of narrow streets, a lively central market square with a gothic cathedral and a medieval abby with beautifully sculptured cloisters. St Antonin Nobal Val (25 km) is a medieval bastide village with a wonderful Sunday market. As you drive towards Cordes from any direction, the town rises suddenly before you, mirage-like on its perfect hilltop. All roads arrive at the bottom of the hill, so you can either walk or drive to the top. Walking up though, through the narrow, steep, cobbled lanes gives you a chance to properly see the dozens of flower covered medieval cottages and mansions. Cordes has long been a favourite with painters and art lovers and the big arcaded main square with a central covered market is a shady, pleasant meeting place for young and old alike, to sit around a café table, pass the time of day and enjoy the balmy air. Conques (45 km), a picturesque village set between wooded hills and red rocks was once a famous centre of pilgrimage and has a sublime 11th century cathedral. Both Albi (60 km) and Rodez are historical towns with beautiful cathedrals and palaces. The old parts of the cities are pleasant to walk around and there are lots of excellent shops. We will be happy to help with anything you need to know about the area. Travel Information
