Situated between Nice and Monaco in the hills of Villefranche-sur-Mer, our house is surrounded by lovely terrace gardens with stunning views across the bay. Villefranche overlooks one of the finest beaches along the Côte d'Azur and has a pleasantly unspoilt old town with tall houses, narrow streets and steps climbing up from the fishing port. Look for the small quayside chapel decorated by Jean Cocteau. The closest shops are 2 kms from the house.
Beyond the headland is the sweeping Baie des Anges and Nice (6 kms) with its graceful Promenade des Anglais. There are some wonderful shops and excellent restaurants and a marvellous flower market every Friday in the old part of town behind the classical pink buildings of the port. Cimiez in the hills behind Nice, an old favourite since Queen Victoria spent summers there, has several ornate 19th century hotels and villas. There are also two museums devoted to Matisse and Chagall. Cannes is 30 kms from the house. All the rooms overlook the garden and are comfortably decorated with country furniture and family mementoes to make the villa as welcoming as home.
The ground floor has a large, open living room and dining room with a fireplace, lots of books, music and television. The kitchen is fully equipped and includes an oven and hob, dishwasher and washing machine, microwave and fridge/freezer. The yellow bedroom and the white bedroom both have double beds. The rose bedroom has two large single beds and the fourth, Empire style bedroom has twin beds. There are two bathrooms and a shower room and two other separate wc's. The breathtaking views from the pool and terrace are without doubt one of the best things about being here. The terrace also has outside table and chairs and a built-in barbecue. The Area
Most places along the coast from Menton close to the Italian border, down to Cannes and beyond have good water sports facilities, from water skiing, jet skiing and sailing, to diving. There are also several excellent Country Club golf courses. Cannes seduces with its relaxed way of life, smart shops and art galleries, palms and gardens along the Boulevard de la Croisette beside the beach. Mougins, behind Cannes has a reputation for particularly good restaurants. Antibes, (15 kms) has one of the best, most colourful markets along the coast. There is a Marineland centre there, which children love and the Picasso Museum. Cap Ferrat remains one of the most exclusive communities on the Riviera and has a large marina, which is good for yacht spotting. You can also visit the delightful villa and gardens built around the art collection of Ephrussi de Rothschild. Monaco and Monte-Carlo (14 kms) really need time and more than a day to see and enjoy, or have a taste of Italy at Menton (30 kms) with its lovely old Italianate buildings and food. Prices are per week Saturday to Saturday arriving at 4pm departing at 10am (2 weeks bookings preferred) Linen and towels are provided There is a charge for the use of the telephone and fax 4 hours extra cleaning can be arranged on request The pool is regularly maintained We regret that the villa is not suitable for children under 12 years A deposit of 30% is requested on booking with the remainder paid 6 weeks before arrival, together with a returnable damage deposit.
