Traditional 19th Century Charentaise House with Pool
Marignac, 25 kms from Saintes in the Charente, West France
4 bedrooms, sleeps 8 people

Le Pont d'Usseau

The house, built in 1850, is very typical of the houses of that period in this part of the Charente. Surrounded on three sides by vines that go into making cognac and pineau, the front of the house looks over a succession of valleys where, in May and June, the fields are filled with the stunning yellow of rapeseed or sunflowers. It is a warm, welcoming family house with a great sense of peace, where everyone can come together over meals or relax in quiet privacy if they wish and where children can roam freely.

The house is on the outskirts of the village of Marignac, a fifteen minute walk through the vines or three minutes by car. A travelling baker passes by the house every day. Jonzac, 7 kms from here has a choice of shops that include a supermarket and paper shop and others where you can find a variety of wines, melon and asparagus in season, oysters, duck breasts and foie gras. There are markets every Tuesday and Friday and an organic market on Sunday mornings, also a very good auberge, Le Vieux Logis, 2 kms from the house, which has good menus at reasonable prices.

The ground floor of the house has a large study/library with a table, armchairs, a telephone, broadband internet connection and some local literature. There is a dining room with a large oval table that seats ten people comfortably, a fireplace and a sofa. The kitchen has all modern comforts including a self cleaning oven and dishwasher plus various pots, pans, utensils and glasses. There is also a utility room with a washing machine, ironing facilities and a fridge/freezer.

The upstairs landing has lovely oak beams and an armoire and leads to the first double bedroom that has a bathroom with a bath/shower and separate wc, and a telephone. The bedroom has a beautiful old armoire with hanging space and shelves. There are two further bedrooms, both double, one with an extra large double bed. The fourth bedroom, is much like the first, large and with a wardrobe and cupboards that have fine original doors. These three bedrooms share a bathroom with shower, two hand basins and a wc. The house has full central heating if needed.

There is a large garden with lawns and shady trees, roses, lavender and other flowers and plants and a terrace in front of the kitchen with table and chairs for outside eating and sunbeds under the three hundred year old lime tree for long afternoon siestas. The garden runs down to a river where there are fig, cherry and lilac trees.

The pool (11 x 4.5 metres) is accessed via three steps, allowing young children (under surveillance) to play safely and also has a sliding security cover.

The Area

For those who like to ride, there are riding stables at Le Val de Seugne, which cater for all levels of expertise and who will organise treks through the countryside as well as lessons. Jonzac has a large lake with a beach area where you can swim and there is a heated swimming pool that is open to everyone. There is also a marvellous new sports and health complex, Les Antilles, where everyone can enjoy swimming in a tropical atmosphere. Jonzac also has a small aerodrome and the GR 360 is a wonderful circuit for walkers.

Saintes, 20 kms north of here, has long tree lined boulevards and pedestrianised areas, good shops and some excellent restaurants. There are pretty fishing villages along the coast where you can find seafood restaurants and marvellous fruits de mer. Royan has several fine beaches with water sports facilities and you can take a trip for the day to the Iles de Ré or Oléron. La Rochelle and Bordeaux can both be easily reached by car. A 20 kms drive south takes you into the Gironde, to the Côtes de Blaye and the Côtes de Bourg vineyards. There is a ferry in Blaye that takes you deep into the Médoc vineyards, and of course, you can't leave without visiting Cognac!
