La Gendrie
Perched on a hill in a marvellous setting overlooking the Dordogne river and miles of forested hills, La Gendrie is part of a tiny hamlet of three houses situated 9 kms from the village of Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne in the very south of the Corrèze, close to the Lot border and within reach of the Auvergne. This is wild, naturally beautiful, unspoilt country where life continues unchanged as it has done for centuries.
Once an ancient vineyard owner's house built in 1680, it has been traditionally restored so as not to lose its original charm and context and the artist owners have designed and furnished the interior down to the last detail with flair and imagination to make it light, relaxed, open and colourful. The ground floor has an open plan living room with a dining area, ornamented with a cantou fireplace and equipped with a music system, which is wonderfully cool in summer. There is a separate, fully equipped kitchen that has a dishwasher, hob and microwave that leads into a back kitchen where everything else is kept, including an oven and fridge and various other appliances. There is also a separate laundry room with a washing machine.
Of the three bedrooms, the first is a double room with a balcony overlooking the river that has a bathroom with shower and a dressing room. The second is a double bedroom with a bathroom with bath and the third bedroom has four single beds. The garden is fenced and extends as far as the edge of the wood and has two terraces, a drystone barbecue and various pieces of garden furniture. The salt water pool is surrounded by a redwood deck and there is an outside shower. The Area
Beaulieu lies beside the Dordogne at the point where the river stops flowing down from the hills and begins winding its way through its most beautiful section. The village has all necessary shops and an organic market one a week and there are more shops and weekly markets in Argentat and Bretenoux, where you can find farm made hams and cheeses, country bread and fresh local vegetables. This is great strawberry country too and Beaulieu holds a big strawberry fair every year in mid May. Argentat is upstream from Beaulieu in a pretty setting beside the river, its steep gray tiled roofs reflected in the water, at the point where the Dordogne descends through wooded gorges. You can hire canoes or fish and swim in the clear waters of the river and within a radius of 10 to 30 kms, hire a microlight, play golf or tennis and ride. Nature has created all manner of natural wonders here. The grottes de Presque are a series of underground galleries full of curious shapes and colours, the waterfall at Autoire has lovely views as you drive down into the valley towards the village and, there is the amazing river cave at Padirac, where you can take a boat through the ice-dark waters to a series of small lakes; scary and thrilling, children love it! There are medieval villages like Curemonte or Loubresse, set high on a hill or Carennac with its pretty Quercy houses and manoirs clustered around an ancient priory. Collonge-la-Rouge is quite unique, a village of small castles made almost entirely of red stone, at once incongruous and charming. Travel Information
