Mill House Gite with pool in the Dordogne
Festalemps, between St Aulaye and Ribérac, in South West France
3 bedrooms, sleeps up to 6/7 people. Riding and Fishing Available.
Moulin de la Gâcherie
Built on the River Rizonne, the 18th century mill house is situated 4 kms from Festalemps near the Double forest between St Aulaye, close to the Cognac vineyards and Ribérac in the heart of foie gras country. The quiet of the countryside here is only broken by the murmur of the river, which is ideal for fishing. We are within reach of Périgueux and Angoulême, Bergerac and the vineyards of St Emilion and Bordeaux, all an hour or less from the mill.
We have horses that can be hired for marvellous treks through the forest, which we know well and will be happy to suggest some routes. Bicycles are available for the same trails. La Jemaye, 5 kms away has a lake with supervised swimming facilities. St Aulaye has a beach area on the river Dronne with water slides that are a great favourite with children. Riberac is a country town where life goes on unchanged and which has a variety of shops and a big Friday morning market. Most of the villages in the area also have weekly markets, so there is usually one going on somewhere almost everyday.
The gite has been entirely restored inside with all modern comforts in the kitchen, but in keeping with its original country character. It still has the beams and the old milling wheel behind glass, and is comfortably and attractively furnished with old country furniture. The entrance takes you into a large L shaped room with a corner kitchen equipped with dishwasher and washing machine, oven and hob, fridge/freezer and microwave, and a toaster and coffee maker amongst other things. There is a traditional dining area and a salon area with television and hi-fi, and a view of the river. Upstairs are three bedrooms. The first, is a double room with a single convertible futon chair and assorted bedroom furniture, the second and third bedrooms, are a twin room and a double room, each with shower rooms. All the rooms have different restful views of the river. Outside is a terrace with garden furniture and a barbecue that looks across the river onto a peaceful field where our horses graze. A path takes you around to the swimming pool, occasionally shared with us, which also has a children's pool. Garden vegetables, farm produced chicken and rabbit and home made preserves are also available. The Area
The Double forest has a wild, mysterious beauty that changes every time you go there. Particularly beautiful in Spring when the chestnut blossom is out, it has numerous lakes and streams and a variety of wildlife, a lovely dappled light on sunny days and a still silence on Autumn ones. The area has prehistoric and Roman remains, medieval architecture and pretty country cottages, little forgotten hamlets, châteaux, manoirs and villages that hold fetes and festivals throughout the year.
