Lovely Basque Style House at Cap Ferret
On the Arcachon Basin, an hour from Bordeaux in South West France
7 bedrooms, sleeps 14 people
La Cataudière
Set amongst the pinewoods of Cap Ferret on the southern tip of the Arcachon Basin, the house is big, built in the traditional Basque style like those further down the coast near Biarritz and Saint Jean de Luz. An hour from Bordeaux, Cap Ferret has long been a favourite second home, weekend haunt for people living in and around the city, who like to swim and sail and it is pleasantly quiet here with a small centre ville with shops and facilities and a large uncrowded beach.
All along the peninsular on the Arcachon Basin side are a series of small fishing villages and oyster beds. On the Atlantic side, the beach stretches into infinity. La Cataudière is equidistant between the two, about 10 minutes walk. Near to the house is a cycle route, so it is easy to bike either to a village market or the beach. The house is surrounded by a woodland garden and has a large terrace where you can sunbathe until dusk. The terrace has an outside table and chairs that can seat up to 20 people, there are also sunloungers and a hammock, which is heaven at siesta time. At some distance from other villas scattered amongst the pines, the house is a place where children can play freely, explore the woods and cycle about safely.
The rooms are light and spacious with high ceilings and harmoniously decorated and furnished. There is a living room area with a fireplace and hi-fi system, and a dining area with a mezzanine that has television and DVD, books, magazines and various games. This opens into a kitchen area with a breakfast bar, which in turn opens directly onto the terrace. The kitchen is fully equipped with an oven and hob, dishwasher, fridge and freezer. The first bedroom has twin beds that can be put together to make a double, the second bedroom has twin beds. There is a bathroom with a separate wc and the main bedroom has an ensuite bathroom with a dressing room area. Upstairs are two more bedrooms, again one with twin beds that can be made into a double bed, the other with bunk beds. There is also a bathroom with shower, wash basin and bidet and a separate wc. The ground floor has a terrace leading straight into the garden and there are two further bedrooms, one with twin beds and a corner kitchenette, the other also with twin beds that can be used as a double bed. The bathroom has a shower, wash basin, bidet and wc. The house is centrally heated for the winter months. The garage has a laundry area, table tennis, a mobile barbecue and there are seven bicycles. The Area
The beaches are about a 20 minute walk or 5 minutes by car or bicycle. The beach on the Arcachon side is about a 10 minute walk. There are several sailing club facilities (with or without lessons) that have courses for children on a small catamaran and others for older children on a 420 and Hobbycat, at the Club de la Vigne. There are also adult courses on a catamaran or cruiser at the Cap Ferret Club des Américains. The Atlantic beaches are good for surfing and body-bording, or you can go deep sea fishing in summer and autumn. There are riding stables 10 minutes away that cater for all levels of expertise and you can use the tennis courts and have lessons, at la Vigne. There are regular ferries that take you direct from Cap Ferret across the bay to Arcachon, which has good shops, bars and restaurants and a casino, or to Mouleau where you can climb or cycle up the great Dune du Pyla (the ferries accept bicycles). The ferry also pauses at the banc d'Argain, a sandy island in the middle of the Basin that is home to thousands of migratory birds. Close to the house is the little fishing village of L'Herbe, an oyster farming village for the past two hundred years that has colourful cottages and much charm, and where you can gorge on oysters and fish. There are two lively markets at Cap Ferret and Piraillan (15 minutes cycling, 5 minutes by car) that are held every day during the summer months and twice a week otherwise. As Bordeaux is only an hour from here, you can easily spend a day there, or amongst both the Bordeaux and Médoc vineyards. And just north of the Garonne river is the pretty village of Saint Emilion, known for its fine wines. Travel Information
