Chateau Chambres d'Hotes Bed and Breakfast
Port d'Envaux, near Saintes in the Charente, Western France
With a separate Cottage and a Studio, sleeping, 2/4 and 2 people
Chateau Mouillepied
This classical little 16th to 18th century seigneurie, close the village of Port d'Envaux on the Charente river near Saintes, has witnessed centuries of history. Now it is a lovely family home, surrounded by terraces and gardens with ornamental ponds. We are about 30 kms from the Atlantic beaches between Royan and Cognac, within easy reach of a number of pretty villages, auberges beside the river, local restaurants, canoeing and fishing.
Mouillepied is ideal as a base from which to enjoy all that the Charente has to offer, or as a restful break en route to and from the North to Southern France and Spain. We have here, six chambres d'hôtes, bed and breakfast rooms with bathrooms, and a self-contained cottage and a studio for those who prefer to be private and independent. The bedrooms are spacious, light and comfortably furnished with simplicity and elegance. The rooms are either a double or a twin, all with bathrooms with a bath or shower and hairdryers, and a separate wc. One or two of the rooms are family rooms, which can sleep three. Extra beds are available on request. All our bed and breakfast rooms have a corner sitting area, an armoire, satellite television and telephone, and are centrally heated. There is also a suite with a main double bedroom with a sofa and a wood burning fireplace, which leads to a second bedroom with twin beds that share the bathroom.
A continental buffet breakfast of croissants and home made jams, fresh orange juice, cereals and seasonal fruit from the garden is served in the Orangerie, which will set you up for a round of golf at any of three 18-hole golf courses, at Saintes, 10 minutes away and at Cognac and Royan, both 30 minutes, or for a morning riding or walking. Saintes, Cognac and Royan all have riding stables. The château grounds are beautiful to walk around, through tree lined alleyways and woods, along by the stream, to perhaps photograph an aspect of the house, the old pigeonnier or the ponds and garden. There are salons where you can relax beside the fireplace and sunbeds under the trees. Tea and coffee are available at any time, free of charge. There are also card games, badminton and croquet, as well as general local information. Le Vivier is an 18th century cottage in the grounds with three, floor to ceiling windows, one of which opens into the garden. It has a ground floor living room and dining room with a kitchenette equipped with a large oven and hob, a microwave and a fridge. Upstairs is a room with three single beds that can be curtained off, and a bathroom. Le Petit Logis is in the typical Charentaise building on one side of the courtyard and is a self contained studio with a separate bedroom next door that can be taken with it, if needed. Both are suitable for wheelchair users. Alongside is the laundry room (at your disposal) and the old bread oven, kept as a reminder of the days when the château produced its own bread every day. The studio is one room with a wood burning stove, a double bed and a kitchenette equipped with an oven, 2 hotplates, a microwave and fridge and a shower room. It open straight onto a lawn with garden furniture, shaded by a large tree. The bedroom next door is a twin room with a shower room. The Logis is as comfortably furnished as the rooms in the château. Linen is changed every week and there are forty two hectares to explore and enjoy. The Area
Port d'Envaux has lovely walks beside the river past 18th century houses to the Château de Panloy and there are quiet places for fishing, also several restaurants. Taillebourg, across the river, has a water sports base, where you can hire canoes, water-ski and swim. Saintes,Royan and Cognac all have golf courses and the National Haras stables in Saintes are worth a visit in themselves. You can also hire horses there and ride over numerous bridal paths in the area. The centre of Saintes has fine medieval and 18th century buildings and some notable Roman remains. There are markets every day except Monday, good shopping, cafés and restaurants and you can take river cruises along the Charente river, which gives a different perspective of the area. The town also has a large Music Festival in early July with guest artists from all over the world. This part of the Charente is famous for its Romanesque churches, particularly the one at Saint Pierre d'Aulnay and you can't leave without visiting Cognac! Travel Information
