Lovely Maison de Maitre with an infinity pool
Banon, near Manosque, an hour from Avignon, in Southern France
6 bedrooms, sleeping 8 /12 people

La Maison de Maître

Our 17th century house was built on top of the 12th century arched ramparts, overlooking the village of Banon. The village is just north of the beautiful Luberon and the views from the house stretch towards the Luberon hills. In the distance you can see Alps and on the plains close by, lavender fields. Banon is famous for its own particular kind of cheese and has a quiet, relaxed, charm. There are various shops and café terraces within walking distance of the house. Manosque, set beside the River Durance amongst the orchards, is a 30 minute drive from here, Avignon is about an hour.

The house is comfortably furnished with 18th and 19th century family furniture and has a peaceful feeling of timeless continuity. The main floor has two sitting rooms, television, video and hi-fi and a double bedroom with a four poster bed and an ensuite bathroom with bath and shower, washbasin and bidet. There is also a separate wc with a washbasin.

A grand staircase leads up to the first floor and five further bedrooms; three of which have four poster double beds, the fourth has two single four poster beds and the fifth bedroom, which has two single beds. They share two bathrooms; one with a large bath, double washbasins and a separate shower and one with a bath, washbasin and bidet. There is also another, separate wc.

Steps lead down to the lower ground floor, where there is vaulted dining room with a lovely stone fireplace, which opens onto an outside terrace with garden furniture and a barbecue. There is a wrought iron gate, between the terrace and the garden and pool, which can be closed while young children are playing there, to ensure their safety.

The kitchen is separated from the dining room by a breakfast bar and is fully equipped with an oven and hob, microwave and fridge, amongst other things. The vaulted back kitchen has a freezer, a second fridge, dishwasher and washing machine.

The garden below the dining room terrace is on different terraced levels, accessed via stone steps and entirely fenced. The infinity swimming pool on the last level has Roman steps and two fountains and is in a unique setting overlooking the valley. It measures 7 x 5 metres with a depth of 1.20m to 2.50m and is available between May and September. A garden gate at the bottom of the garden opens directly down into the village.

The Area

The pretty Provencal villages of the Luberon are within easy reach. Lourmarin is one of the most attractive and several artists and writers have lived there, among them Albert Camus, who is buried in the village cemetery. The village has also gained a reputation for good restaurants, of which there are now about fourteen to choose from, including Edouard Loubet’s 'Le Moulin', which has two Michelin stars and Reine Sammut’s 'La Fenière' with one Michelin star. Others villages are Gordes, a quintessential Luberon village, Bonnieux, or Roussillon, set amongst the ochre hills.

Near Banon is the beautiful 13th century Cistercian abbey of Sénanque, which lies alone in a stunning setting. Its simplicity and the harmony between architecture, silence and light, gives it an eternal presence. Classical music concerts are sometimes held there on warm summer evenings.

Manosque was the home of the writer Jean Giono, whose colourful imagination was inspired by Provencal life and whose house can be visited on the rue Grande. A warren of ancient streets in the centre lead to squares and fountains, the splendid old Hôtel de Ville and the churches of Saint Saveur and Notre Dame.

The lakes at Esparon and Sainte Croix have various water sports facilities and, as ever, you will usually come across a market going on in one or other of the villages.
