Small Manor House in the centre of Brittany
Mur de Bretagne, near Lake Guerlédan, Northwest France
3 bedrooms, sleeps 6 people
Le Manoir de Botminy
Dating from the 16th century, the manoir is tucked away in the countryside, 3 kms from the pretty little village of Mur-de-Bretagne, close to the great serpentine Lake Guerlédan, where you can try your hand at all sorts of watersports or take a boat trip around the lake. Botminy's situation in the middle of Brittany means that it is also within easy reach of the North and South coasts of Brittany, as well as being a charmingly peaceful base in which to relax, breathe some fresh air, forget the pressures of modern life and enjoy this enchanting area.
Mur has a variety of shops and several fetes and festivals during the year. The Chapelle Ste Suzanne in the upper part of the village has 18th century paintings covering the ceiling and the tower, framed by an alley of splendid oaks, was a source of inspiration for the 19th century landscape painter, Carot. The manoir has a comfortable living room and dining room with a large picture window opening onto a terrace and lovely views over the countryside. The kitchen is light and equipped with all modern necessities including an oven and hob, dishwasher, fridge/freezer and microwave. The utility room next door has a washing machine and ironing facilities as well general storage space.
There are two bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs, the first is a double bedroom, the second has two single beds. One of the bathrooms has a bath, the other a shower with a separate wc. The third bedroom is a twin room on the top floor with a shower room and wc.
The Area
The area is full of woods and valleys with a cobweb of tiny country roads, which are ideal for cycling. There are also two riding stables nearby and you can swim, sail and canoe on the lake. Caurel has a row of attractive little bars, Beau Rivage has a lively summer beach and Anse de Sordan on the south shore of the lake has a small woodland cove with a bar and hire boat base. The road from here goes around to Les Forges-des-Salles, which is surrounded by pine trees and exceptionally beautiful. A purpose built 17th and 18th century iron making village in its own valley, it looks more like a chateau with delightful outbuildings. Douarnenez on the coast has guts to match its beauty. It is a fishing town both practical and poetic, deeply immersed in Breton legend and culture. Christopher Wood, a talented, passionate, 20th century painter and subject of Sebastian Faulks biography 'The Fatal Englishman', fell in love with the area of Douarnenez, Tréboule in particular, and left some wonderful images of it. Tréboule still has a warren of tiny lanes and brightly coloured houses above the marina. A gorgeously situated seaside cemetary slopes down towards the bay and is a good point to start a walk through Tréboule. Bénodet, popular with the sailing fraternity and Concarneau are other places worth a stop. The lovely medieval part of Pontivy and the old feudal castle at Josselin, still owned by the same family are other places worth visiting, if you have the time! Travel Information
