Apartment in an 18th Century Chateau in Normandy
Bretteville-sur-Laize near Caen in Northern France
2 bedrooms, sleeps 4 people
Chateau de Brettville
This beautiful 18th century château, classified as an historical monument, is situated on the outskirts of the village of Bretteville-sur-Laize in the Calvados area of Normandy, 15 kms from Caen. Bayeux, the Normandy Landing Beaches, which hold memories for so many, and the fashionable seaside towns of Deauville and Trouville, are all within an hour's drive. Further inland is essential Normandy; a land of delightful manor houses, apple orchards, villages and farms.
The apartment is in part of one of the château buildings, which looks onto a separate courtyard screened by trees, so that it is quite private. The view from the west side is of the park where sheep graze, the east side looks onto the courtyard, trees and a field bordered by a stream. The apartment has a small entrance hall and a general store room with laundry facilities. Stairs lead up to the first floor and the living room and dining room with open views over the countryside and another direct, exterior access, leading down to the courtyard, where there is garden furniture and a barbecue.
The kitchenette is equipped with an oven and hob, fridge, a dishwasher and various appliances. The telephone receives incoming calls. There are two bedrooms, one double, the other a twin that share a bathroom with shower and a separate wc. The village has a choice of shops and facilities and a market every Thursday morning.
The Area
There is a golf course and riding stables within 6 kms of the château and some lovely walks through the forest about a kilometre from here. Bayeux is about 30 minutes away, an attractive town with picturesque streets around the cathedral and home of Normandy's greatest historical and artistic treasure. The Bayeux Tapestry is a seventy metre embroidered illustration of the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 and almost certainly made in England for the Bishop of Bayeux not long afterwards. The Baron-Gérard Museum nearby has a fine collection of paintings, porcelain and lace. Ten kilometres south of Bayeux is the harmoniously classical Abbaye de Mondaye, where the monks sell the honey, fruit and vegetables they produce. Not far from there, Château de Balleroy has a marvellous approach through the village, which lines the drive leading up to it and gardens designed by Le Nôtre, who was a near contemporary of Capability Brown. There is also a hot-air balloon museum there. Just before you get to St Lô from Bayeux is one of Normandy's biggest stud farms, which is open at certain times for visits. The Calvados coastline west of Caen was the theatre for the D-Day Landings, where there are poignant memorials to all those who fell, lest we forget, and vast, beautifully kept cemeteries. Of all the beaches and towns along the coast, Deauville reigns supreme. Full of early 20th century villas, smart shops and restaurants, it has a lively night life and people come for the regattas, racing, gambling at the casino and to parade along the avenue behind the beach (there is too much to else do, to spend much time actually on the beach).
