Château de Monsac
The lovely little village of Monsac lies in the Couze valley close to the Dordogne river, 20 kms from Bergerac and 10 kms from the old bastide town of Beaumont. The chateau sits in fourteen hectares of fields and woods, at the foot of which is a stream where the horses sometimes graze, as generations of them have done before, occasionally gazing across this ancient boundary towards the peaceful activities of village life.
Monsac is close to the Monbazillac vineyards, south of Bergerac and the Pécharmant vineyards, tucked way to the north of the town, which produce an excellent, distinctive red wine. We are within an easy drive of some of the most beautiful parts of the Dordogne, at its best particularly in Spring and early Summer or in September and October, when the days are still long and warm. Places like Sarlat and the amazing prehistoric caves of Les Eyzies de Tayac, or the great châteaux of Beynac, Castelnaud and Le Buge. There is a good boulangerie and general grocery store, 5 minutes drive from here and a supermarket 10 minutes away. The weekly markets in Lalinde, Beaumont, Bergerac and Issigeac, on different days, are filled with flowers and plants, and a feast of local fruit and vegetables and farm produce, like duck eggs, foie gras and goat's cheeses. The Dunois is the medieval wing of the château, and on three floors linked by a 15th century winding staircase with metre thick stone walls that keep it wonderfully cool in summer. Exquisitely furnished in a harmonious marriage of traditional style and modern comfort, it has as well, a sauna, heated swimming pool, a billard room with a pool table and a small driving range for golfers.
The ground floor has a fully equipped kitchen, which includes a dishwasher, fridge/freezer, microwave and hob. The dining room opens onto a south facing terrace and there is a downstairs bathroom with bath, plus a washing machine and dryer. The next floor has a large bedroom with a four poster bed and an en-suite bathroom with bath. The third floor has another en-suite bedroom with a second bedroom, both with four poster beds. There are also two salons, one with satellite television, the other with a pool table, and a shower room and wc. Next to the Dunois is a spare twin bedroom if needed with a sauna, shower room and wc. There is a 10 x 5 metre salt water pool with sunbeds, garden furniture and a barbecue, a driving range and a play area for children with swings and a slide. We live in the other part of the chateau and know this area well, so will be happy to tell you about anything you need to know. The Area
As keen golfers ourselves, we can recommend the golf course we like, 15 kms away. The village has tennis courts anyone can use and there are stables 5 kms from here for those who like to ride. The aero club in Bergerac can organise a flight over the countryside, or parachuting. There is fishing in the river and you can swim in the lake below Château de Lanquais. Lanquais (4 kms) is a remarkably successful blend of a 14th century Gothic castle with a Renaissance palace and well worth a visit. The interior has some magnificent carved fireplaces and fine furniture. Years ago Couze-St Front, near Lanquais, was once known for making high quality paper, exported all over Europe and to Holland in particular. Although little is made now, the old mills beside the river still have a certain charm. A pretty road through the Couze valley leads to Beaumont, a bastide town built in 1272 in the form of an 'H' in honour of Henry III of England. Saint Avit Sénieur, is a sacred place that has been used since prehistoric times and the huge 11th century abby there, is built on the site of a pagan temple and bears the scars of a thousand years of turbulent history.
