Peaceful Country Gite in the Tarn et Garonne
Perville, near Valence d'Agen in Southwest France
2 bedrooms, sleeps 5/6 people. With pool.

Les Tournesols

Set in lovely, peaceful Quercy countryside, Les Tournesols is a traditional, small country farm, surrounded by a garden full of plants and herbs, scented by lavender. A place to simply relax and recharge, feel the sun on your face, laze by the pool, gaze at the stars. There is no hurry to do anything at all! This is also marvellous rambling country with numerous routes that take you to hidden places that in turn delights the eye and warms the soul.

We are about 5 kms from Castelsagrat, a bastide village founded in 1270 that still holds a weekly market in the arcaded market square and where houses still have ancient rounded roof tiles. The village has a general grocery store and a boulangerie, a café, a post office and a hairdresser.

The nearest small town is Valence d'Agen, 7 kms away, which has more shops, including possibly the best boulangerie in the area, and good market on Tuesday mornings. Moissac with the lovely Romanesque church and cloisters of St Pierre, has markets on Saturday and Sunday mornings. There are also a number of restaurants to choose from, ranging from family run country auberge with generous reasonably priced menus and local wines, to the excellent Michelin starred L'Aubegade at Puymirol (early booking necessary).

The gite is part of our house, though quite private. Furnished with country furniture and decorated with family things, the gite has an entrance hall that leads to the kitchen and dining room, the heart of the cottage. The kitchen is well equipped with an oven and hob, microwave and fridge, washing machine and various appliances. The dining room has a particular country charm with a fireplace as the focal point of the room. There is also a downstairs shower room and wc.

The upstairs landing has been made into a small reading area with an extra bed. Leading from this are two pretty attic bedrooms, the first has a double and a single bed, the second has twin beds.

There is an outside terrace in front of the pool, sunbeds, table and chairs and a barbecue and lots of space for children to play in.

The Area

Quercy enjoys generally long hot summers with temperatures that can reach 80 degrees and more during May through until October. It is a great fruit growing area producing an abundance of melons, peaches and apricots, nectarines, the eating grapes that Moissac is famous for, and plums. Perhaps the loveliest times of year is Spring when the orchards are in blossom or Autumn, when the days are still long and warm and at peace.

Each of the old bastide villages in the area has its own unique character; Monjoi with its paved central square and lovely medieval colombage houses, or Donzac, which has a museum devoted to the growing and making of wine, beautifully set on a plateau between the Garonne river and the valley hillside. Auvillar near Valence d'Agen with its unusual triangular market square, is classed as one of the most beautiful villages in France. The Ingres Museum in Montauban, where he was born, has a good collection of the painter's work.
