Gite Amongst the Languedoc Vineyards of Southern France
Montséret, 20 minutes from Narbonne, in the Aude
1 bedroom, sleeps 2/4 people
The Cottage
Warm, dry heat and air scented with gorse, wild thyme and drifts of pine among a patchwork of vineyards that produce the Corbières wines, define this part of the Languedoc. The gite is next to our villa in a tiny hilltop hamlet, close to the village of Montséret, 20 kms from Narbonne and the beach. We only come in the winter, so you have the whole place to yourselves. Local shops are minutes away and there is a honey farm, five minutes walk from the gite that sells a variety of honey, almost straight from the hive and delicious home made spicy honey cake.
The people, the landscape, the pleasant pace of life, the food and of course, the wine, have been shaped not only by Languedoc's ancient history but by the Mediterranean sun and elements, all of which makes this region special. Cathar castle ruins, built high on impossible crags, speak. Quiet country roads meander through vineyards, valleys and small villages. Narbonne is a busy southern town with canalside walks and attractive squares, good shopping and many restaurants and cafés. There are also several market in the town during the week, including one in the Art Deco covered marketplace. Carcassonne is 40 kms from here. The gite has a large, open plan room with a double bed on the mezzanine. The main room has a salon area with a sofa bed and television. The kitchen area is equipped with various dishes and utensils, an oven and hob, fridge and corner dining table. There is also a shower room and wc.
Life for much of the year is lived outside, so everything is thrown open and the covered terrace becomes another room and gathering place to relax, eat and read and gaze at the view. There are wonderful, small country or village restaurants to choose from within easy driving distance and ample opportunity to discover and try some of the Corbière reds, whites and rosés locally. The Area
Narbonne Plage is a long, golden sand beach, just outside the town with a harbour at one end and beach front bars, shops, restaurants and various water sports facilities. Gruissan has a large marina, several beaches and good seafood restaurants and along the coast are little fishing villages like Bages and Periac de Mer. The inland lakes are ideal for wind-surfing and you can find mineral and thermal pools in some of the villages, fishing on the lakes and rivers, canoeing or kayaking. The Sigean African Reserve near Narbonne is an opportunity to see animals in a well designed mixture of drive-through and walk-past enclosures. In complete contrast, Fontfroide has a lovely Cistercian abbey with beautiful, contemplative gardens. Travel Information
