Romantic 16th Century Château in Southwest France

Le Château de Saint Martory
This beautiful Renaissance château dates from 1520 and was first completely restored in the the middle of the 19th century in the romantic style of the period, then again in 1998. Situated overlooking the River Garonne, it is set in forty hectares of park and gardens and has spectacular views of the Pyrénées. The forestry estate around Saint Martory means that there are many places to walk and that children can run about freely in without leaving the grounds.
The entrance to the château is right in the heart of the pretty village of Saint Martory, which has a choice of shops and facilities, including a small supermarket, boulangerie and butcher, a paper shop, pharmacy and doctor. Other villages in the vicinity also have shops, banks and restaurants. The château has a great sense of warmth about it and is very much a family home. It has been luxuriously furnished and decorated with every modern comfort, reflecting the personal, individual taste of the owner. There are 10 bedrooms in total. The chateau has 7 large bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, 6 with king or queen size double beds and 1 with twin beds and there are 3 further double bedrooms and two bathrooms in the farmhouse on the estate. Each bedroom has a television and DVD/CD.
There are several reception rooms, the guard room where dinner is served, the yellow room and the red room, which is the main drawing room. There is also an office and a games room, a large DVD screen and choice of films, a pool table and a variety of games, all of which allows guests freedom of movement to pursue different activities. Comfort is everywhere. The kitchen and the pool house are fully equipped, the office functions like a business centre with a computer and Internet connection and a fax machine. There is a 16 metre square heated swimming pool in the park and teak garden furniture, an ideal place for breakfast or lunch on fine days. The Area
You can enjoy sporting activities such as tennis or golf, skiing, rafting or paragliding, all within an hour's drive. The little spa town of Salies du Salat, 4 kms from the château, just at the beginning of the foothills of the Pyrénées, has a casino and a reputation for its mineral water and the pedestrianised streets, lovely old houses and shady parks make it very pleasant to walk around. St Bertrand-de-Comminges is a wonderful little village perched on top of a hill overlooking the river valley with an immense cathedral. On the way, take time to stop and look around at the ancient village of Valcabrère, especially its beautiful 11th century church, partly built with Roman stone. The left turn at the crossroads coming back down from St Bertrand goes to the Gargas Caves, which are full of marvellous prehistoric drawings of reindeer, bison, horses and other animals, all made thirty thousand years ago. Toulouse in complete contrast is only 45 minutes from Saint Martory, full of life, shops, restaurants, museums and history. The Cathar country begins 70 kms away at Foix, land of the poignant remains of medieval castles, built high in impossible places, in a wild and beautiful landscape. Travel Information
