Manor House Bed and Breakfast in the Midi Pyrenees
Cuzance, between Brive and Souillac, on the Lot/Dordogne border
4 double rooms and family suites with bathrooms. Pool. Dinner available on request.

Manoir de Malagorse

The manor house lies in an idyllic setting in the beautiful countryside of the Lot, in the Dordogne Valley, about 20 minutes South of Brive. The house is the home of Anna and Abel and their children Inés and Louis and golden retrievers, Roxane and Bollinger. They invite you to join them to discover the delights of this exceptional region in their charming bed and breakfast, which has all the luxuries of a country house hotel combined with a friendly family atmosphere.

Malagorse is on the outskirts of the tiny village of Rignac, 10 minutes from the lovely medieval village of Martel and the market town of Souillac, an hour from Cahors. Martel is a village that has escaped notice and goes about its daily business amongst lovely 15th century houses grouped around a massive church that looks more like a castle. Traditionally, Martel has always been an important market centre for truffles and you can often see the serious business of bargains being struck in the lovely old covered marketplace. Market days are Wednesday and Saturday and the village has a good selection of shops and restaurants.

The Manoir is diffused with light and filled with furniture and objects Anna and Abel have discovered in local brocante, country antique shops and fairs. The kitchen is the heart of the house. The immense handmade cooking range is the centre of activity and the huge farmhouse table is sometimesused to host dinner in the evenings, as an alternative to alfresco dining. Breakfast is a sumptuous affair of fresh juice, fruit, homemade yogurts and cereals, freshly baked croissants, brioche and homemade jams.

Dinner is a four course menu, served outside in the courtyard on warm evenings. Anna prides herself in delightful table settings with antique linen, fresh flowers and lots of candles. Abel favours the freshest produce with light aromatic flavours. For example: Rémoulade de Celeri au vinaigre de Truffe, Filet de Perche au gingembre et huile de sésame, Rocamadour aux pommes vertes et miel and to finish, Tarte fine aux pommes et glace aux pruneaux. Interesting regional wines are carefully selected to complement each meal.

Exciting vegetarians menus are available and children can have an earlier tea, if preferred (not chicken nuggets unless requested!). This summer Abel has created a selection of light, aromatic platters, perfect with a glass of chilled Rosé for luchtime, so there is no need to move from the pool!
The living room has a wonderful beamed ceiling and is a great place to unwind, curl up in a leather armchair and browse through a selection of engrossing and entertaining books.

The Manoir has a choice of individually designed double rooms and suites with private bathrooms, thoughtfully decorated with sumptuous fabrics and locally sourced furnishings. The rooms have all the comforts of home with fresh garden flowers, crisp white bedlinen, fluffy bathrobes, hairdryers and delicious toiletries.

Chambre Bleuet is an exceptionally spacious room with double bed has dramatic high ceilings and wooden beams which gives this room a unique atmosphere. Décor is muted linens with splashes of blue and soft drapes.

Chambre Jonquille is a beautifully proportioned room with twin beds, which can also be made into a double bed. An extremely atmospheric room with its intricate beamed ceiling and wrought iron day bed. The lightness of this room is enhanced by its soft, pale yellow and taupe furnishings.

Chambre Coquilicot is an exceptionally large, light and spacious double bedroom with an adjoining dressing room equipped with single bed, suitable for family use. A warm room with chestnut floors, cosy fireplace, white linen fabrics with touches of red.

Chambre Violette is a double bedroom, flooded with light, peaceful and relaxing, decorated in soft, muted greys and violets.

Suite L'Ecurie, in the newly renovated barn, has been created to offer a luxurious space for families, with a downstairs sitting room leading onto a private terrace and a children's bedroom with an ensuite shower room. Upstairs is a stunning mezzanine bedroom with views onto the valley and a bathroom. The suite is flooded with light and decorated in a muted palate of relaxing colours.

Suite Le Poulailler, next to L'Ecurie is the ultimate suite for a couple. Downstairs is a sitting room with French windows leading onto the gardens, a delightful bathroom with freestanding bath and double washbasins and a separate large wetroom. Upstairs is a mezzanine bedroom with a beamed ceiling and oak floors.

The Manoir is set in three hectares of peaceful country gardens with wonderful views. The swimming pool is located in a large meadow and surrounded with comfortable teak sunbeds. An elevated terrace with relaxing garden furniture is a wonderful spot for afternoon tea. Bicycles and children's games are available.

The Area

The Manoir is an ideal place for relaxing. Anna (a British Chartered Physiotherapist) can provide aromatherapy treatments on request. Abel is a talented and passionate chef, who prides himself in using the freshest market produce to create an imaginative combination of modern and traditional cuisine. So why not join him for an afternoon in the kitchen learning about some of his dishes, or perhaps enjoy some wine tasting... Abel can also advise on which vineyards to visit in Cahors or he could arrange a private tour for you.

There is a wealth of sporting activities within a short driving distance of the Manoir. For example, between June and September, you can hire a canoe or kayak and paddle down the Dordogne River, taking in numerous historic sites and the surrounding scenery. Anna and Abel can meet you halfway with a gastronomic picnic! The Souillac Country Club has an 18-hole golf course and is a 20-minute drive away. Open year round, it also has tennis courts, swimming pools, plus a bar and restaurant. The Rochebois Golf Club has 9-holes and is 35 minutes away by car. There are also golf courses in Brive le Gaillarde and Montal.

Le Manoir can loan guests mountain bikes and help you plot a route taking in the local sights and scenery. Riding can be arranged at local riding stables. Watersking is available on a beautiful lake, only a 20-minute drive from Le Manoir and there is a vast range of interesting walks, both direct from the house and in the local area. We can advise you on routes and have many maps and guides available to browse through.

The most popular chateaux in the region include Chateau Castelnaud and Beynac. Other nearby attractions include the prehistoric caves Les Grottes de Cazelle and Gouffre de Padirac, a mysterious river navigation 103 metres underground. The medieval towns of Sarlat and Domme can be visited on a wonderful route around the valley of the Dordogne, passing the spectacular Chateau de Montfort. The famous village of Rocamadour, built into the cliffside, is an essential visit and hidden away, the villages of Carennac, Floriac and Creysse are a delight.

For keen gardeners there is a wonderful range of gardens to visit: Les Jardins du Manoir d'Eyrignac, outstanding in both beauty and design. Les Jardins du Chateau de Marqueyssac has a collection of over 150 boxwoods and spectacular views of castles and villages. Les Jardins de L'Imaginaire Terrasson, is a flower and water garden depicting fairytales and legends. Les Jardins du Chateau de Hautefort are imposing gardens combining medieval fortifications with classical architecture dating back to 1630.

For children, the animal park at Gramat is always a winner or perhaps the prehistoric park in Rocamadour. Inés and Louis have tested them all, so ask them what to do! Advice is always at hand to guide you around the region.
