Bed and Breakfast near St Emilion in South West France
Sainte Terre, an hour from Bordeaux in Aquitaine
3 double rooms, 1 family room, all with shower rooms
The Chambres d'Hôtes
Our house is large and rambling, set in two acres of peaceful garden full of birds, on the edge of the small hamlet of Lavagnac, part of the village of Sainte Terre, an hour from Bordeaux. The church in the village was founded by the Crusaders and contains many ancient murals. We are only 5 km from Saint Emilion, one of the most famous of the Bordeaux wines, in an area covered with vineyards, about 200 metres from the beautiful Dordogne river.
Wine and food are a major preoccupation here and there are numerous vineyards to visit and sample the wine, ranging from small family owned vineyards, where you can taste and buy some surprisingly good wines, to huge estates in the Sauternes, Médoc, Graves, Entre Deux Mer and Blaye areas. Everywhere is within reach if you are prepared to travel a little. St Emilion not only produces fine wines but is in itself, a pretty village built on a small hill overlooking the river and pleasant to wander around through the steep, narrow, cobbled streets and perhaps visit the wine museum or linger over lunch. Visits to the vineyards surrounding the town can be arranged from there. A quiet country lane leads to the house from Lavagnac. No 18 is on the right hand side through large gates where you will find ample parking under the shade of the trees. We have three en suite bed and breakfast rooms and a large breakfast room with a kitchen corner equipped with a hob, microwave, fridge, kettle and coffee maker for anyone who wishes to make snacks, picnics or children's meals. There is also a lounge area with a couple of easy chairs, television and DVD and a drawer full of games for the children. Dinner is available on request.
All the rooms are decorated in pastel colours and furnished in a simple, modern, uncluttered style and have en suite bathrooms to match (shower, wash basin and wc). A hairdryer can be provided. The Yellow Room is a large, airy room that looks out over the garden with a double bed and a sofa that can be opened up to use as a second double bed. The Green Room is a twin room with a divan that can be used as an extra single bed if required, also looking over the garden. A cot can be provided on request. The Blue Room is a twin room on the ground floor with a door opening onto the terrace and garden. The garden is there for everyone to relax in and enjoy.
The Area
Castillon la Bataille is 7 km from here, a lovely bastide town famous for its spectacle at the end of July, beginning of August, re-enacting the last battle of the Hundred Years War. Really worth seeing. Our local mayor owns a boat, which he uses to give daily river trips during the summer with an excellent meal on board. Booking essential! Castillon has a swimming pool and a beautiful lake, Lac de Caddie, where one can swim from the sandy beach, lie under the trees, picnic or eat at the lakeside restaurant. A new golf course has just opened nearby. At Rauzun, 6 km, there is an ancient ruined castle and a cave, the Grotte Celestine, where one dons thigh length boots and miners hats to go underground to walk along an underground river and hear about its history. A great experience! You can visit a market almost every day somewhere in the area and can often come across a brocante country antiques market. There are any number of restaurants to choose from. Recommended are the Huitrier-Pie in St Emilion or the Auberge Saint-Jean in Saint Jean de Blaignac, which you can walk to from here. Travel Information
