Friendly Bed and Breakfast in Brittany
Saint Caradec, between Loudéac and Pontivy in the Côtes d'Armor
6 Double Rooms or Family Suites with shower rooms
La Prévenchère
You will feel right at home at La Prévenchère. Our situation means that we are within easy reach of the North and South coasts of Brittany, as well as being a friendly base in which to relax, breathe some fresh air and forget the pressures of modern life. St Caradec is between Loudéac and Pontivy within 30 minutes of the nearest beach on the Atlantic coast and the peaceful atmosphere is perfectly suited to the beautiful countryside of the Côtes d’Armor. We are close to many traditional Breton villages, churches and medieval abbeys, as well as to the Nantes-Brest canal and the huge Guerlédan lake, to mention only a few.
As you approach St Caradec from the East, the unusual church steeple rises in the distance to welcome you to the village. (There is an 18th century painting of Christ’s burial in the church that is quite rare). Next you pass by the town’s pond with its lovely well kept gardens; a perfect spot for walks. La Prévenchère has six beautifully appointed double rooms or family suites with views over neighbouring gardens and the countryside and of the recently redesigned St Caradec main square. Children are always welcome. Christian and Christiana Caille will greet you with great pleasure and offer you a cup of tea or coffee on arrival or if you prefer, a 'bolée' of delicious Breton cider. Each room is individually decorated, adorned with fresh flowers from the garden and has an en suite shower room. Coffee, tea and fruit juice, croissants, pastries and home made jams for breakfast is served in our dining room.
La Coquelicot is a double room with an en suite shower room that overlooks the garden and neighbouring rooftops to the countryside beyond. La Chinoise is a double room that combines the beauty of the Orient with French antiques including a Louis Philippe armoire. From the bedroom window you can see one of the ancient Breton carved stone crosses (calvaires) that dominate nearly every crossroad in Brittany. Louis XV is a sunny double room with a charming view of La Place du Champ de Foire, where in the old days, villagers gathered for annual fairs and traditional Breton dances and songs accompanied by cider and crepes. This room can be taken as a suite together with La Régence, a cosy room next door where you wake up to birdsong. Ideal for families or friends. Sainte Anne is a twin room with a sofa and comfortable armchair for reading and relaxing. Next door is La Bleue, which has a double bed and bunk beds for children. This room under the eaves shares bathroom facilities with Sainte Anne and is available on request. La Bleue and Sainte Anne can be taken together as a two bedroom suite. There is much to do, see and visit here. We know the area well and will be happy to recommend local restaurants (the best scallops in the world come from St Brieuc) and to advise and help on anything you need to know.
The Area
Walking, hiking and cycling, sailing, canoeing, riding, golfing and swimming are all at hand. Twenty minutes from La Prévenchère is Lac de Guerlédan where you can walk and cycle or hire canoes and kayaks (we can provide bicycles). The sandy beaches on this beautiful lake are perfect for an afternoon dip. Mûr de Bretagne, on the edge of Lac de Guerlédan, has a variety of shops, a choice of restaurants and holds several fetes and festivals during the year. A drive framed by splendid oaks leads to the Chapelle Ste Suzanne in the upper part of the village. The chapel has 18th century paintings covering the ceiling and the tower and inspired the 19th century landscape painter Carot to paint it many times. The lovely medieval part of Pontivy and the old feudal castle at Josselin, still owned by the same family, are other places worth visiting, if you have the time! Travel Information
