Palais Sylvia
The studio apartment is on the third floor of the Palais Sylvia, a beautiful Art Deco building on the Rue Giuglia in the prestigious Musicians Quarter, minutes from the beach. Everything is at hand; the Promenade des Anglais, dazzling shops, the old part of Nice, numerous cafés and restaurants, lovely squares and gardens, all within walking distance. Frequent daily trains and buses run to Cannes, Monaco, Saint Tropez and Menton on the Italian border and the beach caters for all kinds of water sports.
To walk to the Promenade des Anglais and the beach, just walk up Rue Giuglia which changes its name to Rue de Cronstadt after you cross Bvd. Victor Hugo and keep going until you get to the Promenade. To reach the pedestrian zone (Zone Pietones) with its multitude of restaurants, turn left on Rue Rossini and at the end, turn right to cross Bvd. Victor Hugo and carry straight on. It's about an eight minute walk. This also brings you to the edge of Old Nice, which has enchanting, winding streets, shops selling art, crafts and boutique fashions, flower markets and a great antiques market on Mondays. The Palais Sylvia has wide, elegant corridors on each floor, served by a lift. The apartment itself overlooks gardens with tall palms and orange and lemon trees and is modern, quiet, air-conditioned, stylishly furnished with every comfort and has polished parquet floors throughout.
The living room has a very comfortable double bed that converts to a sofa during the daytime, plus another large sofa. There is a large flat-screen television plus many DVDs, a hi-fi for CDs or FM radio and lots of books in case you just want to read. The separate eat-in kitchen is spacious with a balcony and is fully equipped including a washing machine/dryer and microwave. The brilliant white bathroom has a bath to luxuriate in and a hairdryer is provided.
The Area
The 'L’Occitane' restaurant is about 2 minutes walk from the apartment. Walk up the Rue Giuglia to Rue Rossini, turn right and stay on the right side of the road. It serves a good 3-course meal for about €16 not including drinks. Also, explore the food market in Avenue de Grasse (near L’Occitane), open in the mornings. The boulangerie and a Casino supermarket is on Boulevard Gambetta. If the Casino supermarket is closed, try “Huit à Huit” (open from 8-8) in the Rue Verdi. There is a cybercafé in Rue de Belgique in front of the main railway station. Our favourite Italian restaurant in Nice is 'Il Vincoletto' in the pedestrian zone about 8 to 10 minutes walk away. If you ask for Gaetano, the owner’s son, and tell him that I recommended the restaurant to you, I am sure he will do his very best. To get to the restaurant, you come out of the apartment building and turn left, then left again when you get to Rue Rossini. Walk four or five blocks until you come to Avenue Baquis. Turn right there and keep walking, staying on the left-hand side of the road. After a few blocks the road changes to Rue du Congres. At the intersection with the Rue de France, the pedestrian zone branches off to your left. Impossible to miss it. Turn left into the zone and about a hundred yards later, on your left, you will see Il Vincoletto, set back a little from the main walk way with tables in front. Travel Information
