Bed and Breakfast in an Idyllic Manor House in Normandy
Litteau, ideally located for D-Day Beaches and Battlefields Tours
En suite double rooms. Separate 2 bedroom cottage, sleeping 2/4. Private Fishing Lake.

Le Manoir de Hérouville

Built during the 16th and 17th centuries and until approximately ten years ago a farm, Le Manoir de Hérouville has been extensively restored and carefully modernised to retain the feel of a pre-revolutionary Manoir while providing a gracious and comfortable home. We have 2 very large chambres d'hotes bed and breakfast rooms and 1 small double room in the Manoir and 2 bedrooms in the Pigeonnier cottage, situated across the courtyard, which are available for use as bed and breakfast rooms or as a self contained holiday cottage for those who prefer to be independent. The extensive barns hide a tranquil lake with private fishing and large gardens surround the Manoir buildings.

Situated in the Calvados countryside bordered by Le Forêt de Cerisy near Litteau, Le Manoir de Hérouville is positioned astride the June 1944 boundary between 1st US Army and 2nd British Army, close to the airborne landings, invasion beaches and major sites of the Battle of Normandy. Battlefield tours leave central Bayeux daily. In addition, private tours can be arranged to leave from and return to Le Manoir.

If battlefields are not for you then you may be delighted to find large markets each Saturday morning in both Bayeux, which is 18 kilometres to the North East and St Lô, 19 kilometres South West. On Sunday morning Port-en-Bessin, 32 kilometres North East, hosts a large open air market and local fish market. Bayeux and St Lô both have restaurants of every description from Pizza to fine French cuisine and closer to Le Manoir, there are several restaurants, which serve everything from country cuisine to elegant haute cuisine. Families members of all ages are welcomed at lunch or dinner.

The main bedrooms within Le Manoir are huge and elegantly furnished with much loved family antique furniture. Each bedroom has an antique four poster king size or double bed and is spacious enough to accommodate 2 further single beds if required. Both rooms have large, modern private bathrooms, which have both bathtub and shower. Complimentary toiletries and huge white towels are replaced as required. Hair dryers are provided. Guide books and novels are at hand in both rooms to help you plan your days or just to relax and enjoy a quiet evening.

There is a comfortable and elegantly appointed drawing room on the ground floor where guests may meet before breakfast, or chat over a glass of something intoxicating or soothing before bed. Books and maps are again available to assist in planning your trips to the Battlefields or Landing Beaches. Children's games are available.

Breakfast, for which Le Manoir is justly famed, is served in the sunny dining room and is luxuriously continental; seasonal fruits, fresh orange juice, a selection of cheeses and continental meats with free range eggs (often from our own hens). Yoghurt, bread, brioche, cinammon buns and scones are baked daily in the Manoir kitchen and are served with home made preserves. Cereal is served with walnuts, honey and freshly prepared compote. Coffee is ground and made to your requirements and there is a wide range of teas including herbal and decaffeinated.

Le Pigeonnier (dated 1732) was the Manoir dovecot and its size probably denoted the standing of the original owners. Now renovated, it has been turned into a charming hideaway cottage for 2 or 4 persons. Separated from the Manoir by the gravelled courtyard, Le Pigeonnier has three floors. The top floor with exposed conical roof and beams complete with original makers marks, is a twin bedroom, which has extensive views over the ponds and gardens. The middle floor is furnished as a double bedroom with an antique brass and iron bed and by contrast, has a modern en-suite shower room. The ground floor has a bijou kitchen with fridge and cooker, microwave, kettle and toaster, a seating area with television and video with a library of films depicting the martial history of the area and a dining area.
Bed and breakfast guests in Le Pigeonnier take breakfast in the dining room of Le Manoir and have the advantage of catering for themselves, or eating out at any of the good eateries in the area. Le Pigeonnier can also be taken on a weekly self-catering basis.

There is a barbeque and large picnic table by the lake, which guests are welcome to use. Charcoal and implements, crockery and cutlery are available on request. The lake is stocked with fish of various kinds but mainly enjoyed by our guests as an afternoon of fun with a beer before a barbecue. The glorious and completely private gardens reflect the care and attention which is lavished on all areas of the Manoir and on a warm summer evening, are a perfect place to relax with a glass of wine.

The Area

On our doorstep is the Cerisy Forest, 2130 hectares of tall beech and oak trees to discover on foot, horseback or bicycle. At all times magnificent, this forest with its picnic tables and trails is user friendly and absorbing. Deer and wild boar make their home in the forest and can sometimes be seen in early evening feeding at the roadside. Hedgerows and banks are speckled with primroses, wild orchids, foxglove and campanula in their successive seasons and travellers joy festoons the ancient hedges.

If golf is your game then you will be well catered for as there are 12 golf courses within easy reach. The 27 hole course at Omaha beach is of International standard. If you are keen on fishing, then you have the choice of drowning worms on our own stocked lake, or at the popular and well maintained Etangs de Planquery, which is less than 5 minutes from Le Manoir.

You would expect to find stables in horse mad Normandy and there are two excellent riding establishments within 10 minutes of Le Manoir. Forest and beach rides are popular with visitors to the area. The National Haras is located on the outskirts of St Lô. In itself a spectacular set of buildings, it houses an even more spectacular set of stallions and every Thursday afternoon, displays of carriage driving and riding designed to showcase the magnificence of the stallions are performed in the courtyard of the Haras.

Bayeux is just 20 minutes away with its cathedral and famous tapestry. For the past twenty one years, during the first weekend in July, the environs of the cathedral have been turned into a medieval fayre with a medieval market and a parade in costumes. You could enjoy the surreal experience of walking down a medieval alley surrounded by modern day visitors and watch a pair of medieval archers stride towards you in perfect harmony with their surroundings.

When the children need to work off some energy, a visit to Festy Land, located on the N13 near Caen, is your answer. Vikings, jousting, rope walkways, pirates and dinosaurs are enough to keep anyone busy for the day. There are also two zoo's within an hour's drive of the Manoir. Just over an hour away is Honfleur, an enchanting historic port with excellent waterside bistros. Monet's garden at Giverny is about 2 hours from Le Manoir and Mont St Michel is a 90 minute drive.
