Chambres d'Hotes Bed and Breakfast in the Pas de Calais
Mouriez, near Hesdin and Le Touquet, in the Seven Valleys Region
Double and Family Rooms with en suite bathrooms. Dinner available on request.

La Petite Retraite

La Petite Retraite is a beautiful old fermette, situated in a peaceful setting in the rural farming community of Mouriez, a few kilometres from the market town of Hesdin. The farmhouse stands on nearly two acres of lawns and gardens, an orchard and field with small animals including chickens and ducks and there is private parking. Children are always welcome to visit the animals and we never say no to help at feeding time, just remember to bring your wellies!

The farmhouse has been carefully refurbished and modernised to provide comfortable, quality Bed and Breakfast accommodation in our family home. Whatever the purpose of your visit, a weekend break, a family holiday, house hunting, or maybe an overnight stop on your way to the South, a warm welcome awaits all who come.

Mouriez is a quiet, farming village set in beautiful countryside. Nestling between the Rivers Canche and Authie, La Petite Retraite offers an ideal base for exploring this picturesque region of Northern France. A 5 minute drive takes you to the market town of Hesdin, where you will find a selection of restaurants and cafe bars, small shops and boutiques, banks and supermarkets. A lively market takes over the town square every Thursday and is well worth a visit to pick up a bargain or souvenir. The popular golfing resorts of Le Touquet and Nampont St Martin are a 30 minute drive away, as are the beautiful sandy beaches at Berck-sur-Mer and Fort Mahon. Disneyland Paris is approximately 2½ hours by car.

La Petite Retraite has two versatile bedrooms, one sleeping 2 to 3 people and one sleeping up to 4 people. Both rooms are fresh, bright, comfortable and tastefully decorated and have beautiful, timber-vaulted ceilings, giving them a delightful charm and character.

The first room, sleeping up to 3 people, contains one double bed and one single bed. There is also space for a travel cot if required. The bedroom is presented with quality bed linen, has a stylish private bathroom and DVD and video players. There are tea and coffee making facilities, a fridge and some crockery and utensils to enable guests to prepare a simple snack. A microwave and toaster can be made available for a small additional cost, please enquire.

The second room offers spacious accommodation for up to 4 people. Containing one double bed, one single, and an optional guest bed, it is ideal as either a family room or for friends travelling together. There is also plenty of space for a travel cot if required. It has tea and coffee making facilities, a table with two chairs, a fridge and some crockery and utensils to enable guests to prepare a simple snack. A microwave and toaster can be made available for a small additional cost, please enquire. There is also a DVD and Video player in the room. Quality bed linen and a nautical themed en suite bathroom complete the bedroom.

A highchair and pushchair are also available for guests and we have various children's toys and family games.

Start your day with our continental breakfast, which includes tea, coffee, orange juice, cereals, yogurt, croissants, bread and a selection of preserves and home-made jams. Evening meals can be provided by prior arrangement. Our style of cooking is varied and dishes range from Beef Bourguignon, Cottage Pie and Chicken Casserole to Chilli Con Carne, Vegetarian or Meat Lasagne and Curry. All meals are served with the appropriate accompaniments, along with wine and soft drinks.

The Area

The golf courses at Le Touquet and at Nampont St Martin are both 30 minutes from here. There are a number of riding schools in the area (10-15 minutes drive) where lessons and trekking can be arranged. In addition, Randonnée avec un Âne (or Walking with Donkeys) is popular in the area. A day's trek with a donkey costs around 40 euros and is a great way to see the countryside. (By the way, the donkey carries your picnic and coats, you have to walk!). There are also many cycle routes in the area and several sign posted walking paths. Canoeing and fishing are also easily accessible.

There are many other local attractions within easy reach, including the Medieval History Centre at the site of the battle of Agincourt (15 minute drive), an extensive choice of museums and many beautiful parks and gardens. Aqualud Waterland Adventure Park, Dennlys or Bagatelle Theme Parks make for great family days out (Dennlys is especially good for younger children) and all are within a 30 minute drive. L'Agora in Le Touquet is a large leisure centre with swimming pool, jacuzzi, saunas, bowling alley and restaurant.

A trip to Albert will take you about 1 hour. Here you will find the ‘Somme 1916’ museum, created in a 230 metre underground passage which was used as an air-raid shelter during the Second World War. Also in the immediate vicinity are many of the Cemeteries and Memorials of the Battle of the Somme. A visit to the Newfoundland Memorial at Beaumont-Hamel is highly recommended.

There are a number of weekly markets in the surrounding towns, Hesdin, Montreuil-sur-Mer, Le Touquet and Fruges to name but a few. All are very typical of the Pas de Calais and a delightful experience, even if you only visit one.

Fort Mahon and Berck-sur-Mer are just two of the lovely sandy beaches in the area. Both resorts have shops, restaurants, cafe bars and of course, plenty of delicious ice cream! La Cite des Artisans at Buire-le-Sec contains a haven of hand-crafted gifts and homewares, and is well worth a visit. Even items costing €1 will be beautifully gift wrapped for you.

Nausicaa Sea Discovery Centre in Boulogne-sur-Mer (approximately 45 minutes drive) is the French equivalent of The Sea Life Centre, a great family attraction. L'Abbaye et Jardins de Valloires in Argoules are just a 10 minute drive from here. You can take a guided tour around the Abbey and wonder through the beautiful, vast gardens at your leisure. The roses are magnificent. There is also a garden centre, restaurant and gift shop.
