Country Bed and Breakfast in the Lot, Midi Pyrenees
Catus, near Cahors, Sarlat and the Lot and Dordogne Valleys
5 en suite double and twin rooms. Large heated pool.
La Galerie
Our chambres d’hotes bed and breakfast is set in the beautiful Lot countryside just outside the village of Catus, 12 km from Cahors, between Rocamadour and Sarlat in the Dordogne. Each room is stylishly decorated and furnished, has an en suite shower room and French/English television, a sitting area and an independent access. The perfect place for a relaxing holiday or a short break, La Galerie is set in two hectares of lawns and wooded grounds with a boulodrome and badminton court. The salt water pool is large and heated with a terrace equipped with sunbeds.
The vineyard trail runs from the west of Cahors along the Lot valley to the lovely medieval town of Puy-l’Evêque. To the east of Cahors, sitting high above the Lot valley is St-Cirq-Lapopie. Close to Catus are several highly recommended restaurants. Brive and the nearest airport is an hour from here. Each of our double or twin rooms has a comfortable sitting area with a sofa or armchairs and French and English TV. WiFi Internet access available. Every bedroom has an en-suite bathroom with shower, supplied with towels, toiletries and a hairdryer. Each room has its own independent access and all the rooms have heating for the cooler season. The beds have hypoallergenic sprung mattresses for extra comfort. The double beds are queen size and the twin beds are 90 cm wide.
Two rooms are wheelchair friendly as these rooms have no steps, however all rooms are on ground floor level. Some of our bedrooms have lovely views overlooking the delightful, flower-filled courtyard and gardens and others have wonderful views of the pretty gardens and the swimming pool. There are outdoor sitting areas with chairs and tables for each of the rooms, in the courtyard or on a deck beneath grape vines, or verandas where guests can enjoy the warm evening sun and a glass of wine. Breakfast is served in the delightful gallery full of wonderful paintings. The continental buffet breakfast includes croissants and bread, cold meats and cheese, cereals and yoghurts, jams and honey, coffee or a selection of teas, and seasonal fresh fruit of the region. There are also many good local restaurants and "Bonnes Tables du Lot" close to La Galerie. Our local restaurant, L’Auberge, serves good regional cuisine. In the neighbouring village of St Medard is probably the best restaurant of the region, Restaurant Le Gindreau, for traditional and inventive gourmet cuisine. In the nearby village of Les Arques is the hugely popular La Recreation made famous, not only by its fabulous menu, but also by its story being told in the book ”From here, you can’t see Paris” by Michael Sanders. You may need to book beforehand, which we will be happy to help you with.
The Area
Lake Vert neaby has a beach, pedalos, canoes, tennis courts, quiet places to fish from, a restaurant and lakeside café/bar. Catus itself has a post office, bank, newsagent, a supermarket, bakers and butchers, a grocery store and a popular Tuesday morning market. There are riding stables, numerous places to walk and cycle off the beaten track and a golf course within reasonable distance of La Galerie. We recommend exploring the River Lot from the water. There are river boat trips and boats for hire, including canoeing and kayaking. Cahors, the capital of the Lot, is situated on the river Lot 12 km away, an ancient southern town with a good selection of shops, cafés, bars and restaurants, museums, galleries and a maze of lanes in the old part of town that run between attractive stone and half-timbered buildings. The beautiful 14th century Pont Valentre, the only fortified bridge in the world with three towers, is the symbol of Cahors. The Wednesday and Saturday morning markets are stuffed with local goodies and the vineyards around the town are famous for their deep, ruby red wines. The lovely town of Sarlat in the Dordogne is about 40 km from here, close to many wonderful chateaux along the river. Rocamadour is roughly 50 km to the north of Catus, its ancient ramparts and houses, clinging to the rock face above the Alzou gorge. Close by, grottos and caves can be found in the Causse du Quercy, many with prehistoric paintings and engravings. Throughout the summer months, you will always find festivals and fêtes to visit in the local area. The fêtes celebrate everything from local produce to medieval history and music and wine always seem to be flowing freely... Nearby, visit some of the famous grottos and caves in the Causse du Quercy and the 103 metre underground river of the Gouffre de Padirac. And many others including the Grotte du Pech-Merle have prehistoric paintings and engravings on display. Travel Information
