Riverside Country House, Mill and Cottage with Heated Pool
Lalandusse, 15 minutes from Bergerac, in the Lot-et-Garonne
2, 3, 4 or 9 bedrooms, sleeps 4, 6, 8 or 18 people. Private River Fishing

Le Grand Auque

The manor farm dates from the 14th century, a group of separate houses comprising the main house, a water mill and a cottage, set in lovely gardens bordered by the River Dropt. The swimming pool is large, heated, has an alarm system and is surrounded by a terrace equipped with sun loungers. There is nowhere better on a breathlessly hot day.

Le Grand Auque is quite unique. The houses have all the modern comforts of today combined with history, charm and character; the setting is unspoiled, peaceful and relaxed. The river meanders around several uninhabited islands. We have 400 metres of private riverbank from which to spend a day fishing and a row boat to take across to one of the islands. There is also an 18th century dovecote in the grounds and an abundance of wildlife.

Lalandusse is a hilltop village with a bar, shop and restaurant and a bridleway connects the property to the pretty village of Lauzun. A few minutes drive to the north is the fairytale castle of Monbazillac, set amongst its famous vineyards. Just beyond that is Bergerac and a greater selection of shops and restaurants. The airport is 15 minutes away.

The houses can be taken separately (you would rarely find anyone else here in early Summer or Autumn), or together as a whole in summer for a large family or friends travelling together. All the houses are furnished with country furniture and have lovely views from almost every window. Direct access to the river is fenced, so children can run around safely.

The house dates from the 14th century and with its steep roof, great oak beams, stone and wood floors and large, open fireplaces, is very typical of this area. The house is centrally heated, on three floors and has a huge kitchen and dining room with a large dining table. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything necessary to satisfy any enthusiastic cook, including a dishwasher and laundry facilities.

The sitting room has a sofa bed if needed, television, DVD and a hi-fi system. There are 3 double bedrooms, one with an en suite shower room, one with a washbasin and wc and a separate bathroom and wc.

The barbecue area at the back of the house overlooks willow trees and the dovecote. To the right of the drive is the 12 x 6 metre swimming pool with Roman steps.

The watermill is next to the main house and looks over the garden. To the side of the house is a large terrace and dining area overlooking the millpond and river, across to the islands, so you can enjoy watching the kingfishers, while sipping a glass of wine and barbecuing.

The house has 4 double rooms, one with an en suite shower room, one with a washbasin and wc, plus a bathroom and separate wc. The open plan main room has a fully equipped, fitted kitchen, a dining area and a lounge area with satellite television and DVD. Extra beds and a cot can be provided on request.

The cottage is a traditionally built stone country cottage with 2 bedrooms, ideal for a couple, a family with two children, or friends down for a week’s fishing. The floors are tiled, the walls are white, there is central heating and a wood burning stove for the winter months.

The main room has a kitchen equipped with a dishwasher and washing machine amongst other things with a dining area and a lounge area with satellite television, DVD and a music system.

The garden and pool are there to be enjoyed and there is private parking.

The Area

There is no better way to experience the beauty of the Dordogne Valley than by hiring a canoe or taking a river cruise to enjoy the wildlife of the river. Along the way, you will see some of the most picturesque villages in the Dordogne, some of which have literally been carved out of the cliffs. Locally, there are riding stables, where you can hire horses to go trekking and quiet country lanes for cycling and walking. Bicycles can be hired in Castillonnes or Eymet.

The golf course at Château des Vigiers, about 30 minutes away, was designed by Donald Steel, considered to be one of the very best 'natural' golf course architects. He created this unique 18-hole, par 72 course in a splendid setting amidst plum trees, oak woods, lakes and vineyards. Château des Merles has an excellent 9-hole golf course, roughly 20 minutes by car.

Every day you could visit a different market somewhere, each with their individual character. We go to the small Friday market near the old bridge in Bergerac where, along with the normal mouth watering local produce, you can find super fresh fish and shellfish. We are also within easy striking distance of the lovely bastide towns of Eymet (Thursday market) Issigeac (Sunday market) and Castillonnes (Saturday market), best combined with lunch!
