Villa Pierre
Canet-en-Roussillon is a charming village surrounded by vast sandy beaches on the Mediterranean coast, 15 km from Perpignan, within easy reach of the Spanish border in an area known as the new Riviera. The house is a short walk from the nearest beach (we have bicycles), has views of the sea and of Mount Canigou in the background and is well placed to explore this part of the South of France. The beaches here have a range of water sports facilities and families are well catered for. There are restaurants and cafes to suit all tastes, including great seafood, local shops and an excellent golf course, popular all year round.
Perpignan is the capital of French Catalonia, though its heart and soul lie in the mountains, the forests and pastures of the Pyrénées south west of the town. Catalan people are big hearted, friendly, spirited and independent, proud of their ancient heritage, art, music and language. On warm summer evenings you can often see people dancing the traditional Sardana in one of the central squares, a folk dance that looks like simplicity itself until it quickens like a bolero.
The ground floor of the villa has a main living room and kitchen, a cloakroom and access to the garden terrace. The kitchen is equipped with enough of everything for ten people and has a dishwasher and washing machine, an oven and microwave, fridge/freezer, coffee maker, kettle and toaster. There is television, DVD and a hi-fi and the house is centrally heated and has air-conditioning. Upstairs are 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a separate toilet. The top floor is open plan with 2 spare beds and another television, ideal for older children. The terrace is equipped with a table and chairs and a barbecue for eating outside. The Area
This is great orchard country, mainly cherries, peach and apricot that also produces an early harvest of spring vegetables, artichokes and other vegetables several times a year, so the local markets are always overflowing with goodies. The vineyards further along the coast mean that a choice of wine is readily available. Much of the centre of the old part of Perpignan is pedestrian and there are shops where you can find distinctive Catalan fabrics, espadrilles and hand made pottery. There is also a huge weekly flea market, where you may find some treasures. The small Palais des Rois de Majorque still stands and is very charming surrounded by the Citadel's massive 14th century fortifications. The River Basse runs through the centre of the city, its banks transformed into lovely gardens, which stretch as far as an esplande lined with plane trees, palms and mimosas. On the main road south to Spain and the Pyrénées is the ancient little hilltop town of Elne. Largly ignored by the world, it has a wonderful Spanish-Catalan atmosphere and was a thriving port at least 700 hundred years before Christ and was for a over a thousand years, the capital of Roussillon. Rising above tangled alleys and clustered Roman tiled rooftops is the 11th century cathedral with its exquisite 12th to 14th century cloisters. Further along the coast is Collioure, a seaside village of immense charm, much favoured by 20th century painters such as Picasso, Matisse and Juan Gris. Travel Information
